Postoperative issues after uterine fibroid surgery?

Hello: I just underwent a traditional myomectomy on September 16.
I have a few questions: 1.
When can I expect my menstrual period to return? 2.
When is it safe to resume sexual activity? 3.
Sometimes, after walking for a long time, I experience a sharp pain in the vulvar area.
Could this be a sign of infection? Thank you!

Dr. Li Guanghan reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: 1.
It's not certain, but if you calculate one month after the last menstrual period before the surgery and it still hasn't arrived, you should consult a doctor for an examination.
2.
After one month post-surgery, the doctor will evaluate and then make a decision.
3.
I'm sorry, but I can only provide an answer after reviewing the examination results at the Hsinchu City Hospital Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.

After undergoing a myomectomy, it is common to have several concerns regarding menstruation, sexual activity, and any post-operative pain. Let's address your questions one by one.

1. When will menstruation return?
After a myomectomy, the return of menstruation can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, many women may expect their menstrual cycle to resume within 4 to 8 weeks post-surgery. However, this can depend on various factors, including the individual’s hormonal balance, the extent of the surgery, and whether the ovaries were affected during the procedure. It is also important to note that some women may experience changes in their menstrual cycle after surgery, such as irregular periods or changes in flow. If your period does not return within a couple of months, or if you experience any unusual symptoms, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider.

2. When can sexual activity resume?
Most healthcare providers recommend waiting at least 4 to 6 weeks after a myomectomy before resuming sexual activity. This waiting period allows your body to heal adequately and reduces the risk of complications, such as infection or increased bleeding. However, it is crucial to follow the specific advice given by your surgeon, as they will consider your unique situation and the details of your surgery. If you have any concerns or experience pain during sexual activity after resuming, it is important to reach out to your healthcare provider.

3. Is the pain in the vulvar area a sign of infection?
Experiencing pain or a sharp sensation in the vulvar area after surgery can be concerning. While some discomfort is normal as your body heals, especially if you have been more active than usual, persistent or severe pain could indicate an issue. Signs of infection may include increased redness, swelling, discharge, or a fever. If the pain you are experiencing is sharp and occurs consistently, especially during activities like walking, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider. They may perform an examination to rule out any complications, such as infection or issues related to the surgical site.

In summary, after a myomectomy, it is essential to monitor your body’s healing process and communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your recovery and help address any complications that may arise. Remember that everyone's recovery journey is different, and it is crucial to prioritize your health and well-being during this time. If you have any further questions or experience unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your medical team for guidance.
