Why has it become difficult to treat?
Hello Dr.
Lai, I went to Chimei Hospital and Guo General Hospital for consultations, but the doctors keep telling me the same old story: just try taking medication or switch medications.
I have been continuously taking medication; initially, I was prescribed a week's worth, then two weeks, then three weeks, and now after each consultation, I receive a month's supply.
It feels like the doctors are just brushing me off.
During this time, I have also been visiting a urology clinic out of pocket, spending nearly NT$80,000, which has almost depleted my savings.
Why are the current doctors not recommending the tests that doctors online suggest, such as the slide examination, four-glass urine test, rectal prostate fluid examination, and biopsies or ultrasound tests? They only ask about my symptoms and prescribe medication.
I feel really disheartened and helpless.
I have inflammation at the urethral opening that looks like a sore; it becomes painless for half an hour after applying an antibacterial anti-inflammatory ointment, but it recurs the next day.
I am very frustrated and confused about why the doctors say no tests are necessary.
Dr.
Lai, do you know any urologists in Tainan? Thank you in advance for your help.

It sounds like you are experiencing significant frustration and distress regarding your urological condition, especially given the lack of effective treatment and the repetitive cycle of medications without substantial improvement. This situation can be incredibly disheartening, and it's understandable that you feel overwhelmed and hopeless.
Urological conditions can be particularly challenging to treat for several reasons. First, the symptoms can be quite varied and may overlap with other medical issues, making it difficult for healthcare providers to pinpoint the exact cause. Conditions such as urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, prostatitis, or urethral syndrome can present with similar symptoms, yet require different treatment approaches. This complexity often leads to a trial-and-error approach with medications, which can feel frustrating when you are not seeing the desired results.
Moreover, the nature of urological symptoms can be sensitive and personal, which may lead some healthcare providers to be less thorough in their examinations or to rely heavily on medication rather than pursuing more invasive diagnostic tests. It’s important to advocate for yourself and express your concerns clearly to your healthcare provider. If you feel that your current doctors are not taking your symptoms seriously or are not providing the comprehensive care you need, it might be time to seek a second opinion from another urologist who may be more willing to explore further diagnostic options.
In terms of specific tests, you mentioned procedures like urine analysis, imaging studies, or even biopsies. These tests can provide valuable information about the underlying issues affecting your urological health. If your current doctors are dismissing these tests, it may be beneficial to ask them directly why they believe these tests are unnecessary. Understanding their rationale can help you decide whether to continue with them or seek out a different specialist who may be more aligned with your needs.
Additionally, consider discussing the possibility of referral to a urologist who specializes in chronic pelvic pain or urological disorders. Specialists in these areas may have more experience with complex cases and could offer alternative treatment options, including physical therapy, dietary changes, or even lifestyle modifications that could alleviate your symptoms.
Lastly, it’s essential to take care of your mental health during this challenging time. Chronic health issues can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression, which can further complicate your physical symptoms. Seeking support from mental health professionals, support groups, or even online forums can provide you with coping strategies and emotional support as you navigate your treatment journey.
In summary, while your situation is undoubtedly difficult, there are steps you can take to advocate for yourself and seek the comprehensive care you deserve. Don't hesitate to push for the tests and treatments you believe are necessary, and remember that finding the right healthcare provider can make a significant difference in your treatment experience.
