Sudden darkening of the lips..?
Hello doctor, today while I was taking a shower, I suddenly noticed that my lips have turned dark.
My friends also noticed that my lips have become much darker.
I spend most of my time indoors and only go out at night, so I rarely get sun exposure.
However, I have been relying on the computer for about a year now.
Recently, I have noticed that after sitting in a chair for about 20 minutes, I easily feel dizzy and lose my balance, as if I am about to faint.
Additionally, I feel a pressure in my chest on the right side, and I have to lie down or stand up immediately; this situation improves within 5 minutes.
Now I have discovered that my lips have darkened, and I am unsure if this indicates an underlying disease.
I have also been a chronic carrier of hepatitis B for a long time and haven't had a check-up in 5 years.
I wonder if there is any correlation.
I would appreciate your help in answering my concerns.
Thank you very much.

Hello, a change in facial or lip color to black is indeed a significant warning sign regarding your health.
There are many potential causes, so I recommend that you visit a gastroenterology clinic as soon as possible for an examination to seek early diagnosis of any underlying conditions.

More Info
The sudden darkening of the lips can be concerning and may indicate various underlying health issues. In your case, the combination of symptoms you described, including the darkening of your lips, dizziness, a sensation of pressure in your chest, and a history of being a hepatitis B carrier, warrants a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional.
Firstly, the darkening of the lips can be attributed to several factors. One common cause is hyperpigmentation, which can result from sun exposure, although you mentioned limited sun exposure. Other potential causes include:
1. Medications: Certain medications can cause pigmentation changes in the skin and mucous membranes, including the lips. If you are taking any medications, it would be wise to review them with your doctor.
2. Systemic Conditions: Conditions such as Addison's disease, which affects adrenal gland function, can lead to increased pigmentation. Other systemic diseases, including liver disease, can also manifest as changes in skin color, including the lips.
3. Nutritional Deficiencies: Deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals, particularly B vitamins, can lead to changes in skin and mucous membrane pigmentation.
4. Smoking: If you smoke or have been exposed to tobacco smoke, this can also contribute to changes in lip color.
5. Underlying Health Issues: Given your history as a hepatitis B carrier, it is essential to consider that liver health can significantly impact your overall well-being. Liver dysfunction can lead to various symptoms, including changes in skin pigmentation and systemic symptoms like dizziness and chest discomfort.
Regarding your symptoms of dizziness and a sensation of pressure in your chest, these could be related to several factors, including anxiety, dehydration, or even cardiovascular issues. The fact that these symptoms improve when you change your position (lying down or standing) could suggest a positional component, but it is crucial to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
Given your long-standing hepatitis B status and the absence of recent check-ups, it is highly advisable to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider. They may recommend:
- Blood Tests: To check liver function, including liver enzymes, bilirubin levels, and hepatitis B viral load.
- Imaging Studies: Such as an ultrasound of the liver to assess for any structural changes or complications related to hepatitis B.
- Physical Examination: A thorough examination to assess for any other signs of systemic illness.
In summary, the sudden darkening of your lips, combined with your other symptoms, should not be ignored. It is essential to seek medical attention promptly to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate management. Regular follow-ups, especially considering your hepatitis B status, are crucial for maintaining your health and preventing potential complications.
