Irregular menstruation?

My menstrual cycle has always been regular and normal, but at the end of August, I took medication for a cold, and as a result, my period was delayed by a week.
Now, this month, it is almost two weeks late (I have purchased a pregnancy test and it shows no signs of pregnancy).
What should I do now?

CCC, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/10/18

Irregular periods can be concerning, especially when you have previously experienced regular menstrual cycles. There are several potential causes for a delay in menstruation, and understanding these can help you determine the next steps to take.

Firstly, it’s important to note that various factors can influence your menstrual cycle. Stress, significant weight changes, excessive exercise, hormonal imbalances, and certain medications can all lead to irregularities. In your case, you mentioned that you had a cold and took medication, which could potentially affect your cycle. Some medications, particularly those that affect hormonal levels, can lead to changes in your menstrual cycle.
Since you have already taken a pregnancy test and it was negative, it is less likely that pregnancy is the cause of your delayed period. However, if you are still concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, it may be worth repeating the test after a few days or consulting with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can be more sensitive than home pregnancy tests.

If pregnancy is ruled out, consider the following common causes of delayed menstruation:
1. Stress: Emotional or physical stress can significantly impact your hormonal balance, leading to delayed ovulation and, consequently, a late period.
2. Weight Fluctuations: Both weight loss and weight gain can affect your menstrual cycle. If you have recently lost or gained a significant amount of weight, this could be a contributing factor.

3. Hormonal Imbalances: Conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) or thyroid disorders can lead to irregular periods. If you suspect a hormonal imbalance, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.

4. Lifestyle Factors: Changes in your routine, such as increased physical activity or changes in diet, can also impact your menstrual cycle.

Given that your period is now almost two weeks late, it would be advisable to take the following steps:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Since your period has been delayed for an extended period, it would be prudent to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly blood tests to check hormone levels.

2. Keep Track of Your Cycle: Documenting your menstrual cycle, including any symptoms you experience, can provide valuable information to your healthcare provider. This information can help identify patterns or triggers related to your irregular periods.

3. Consider Lifestyle Adjustments: If you suspect that stress or lifestyle changes may be contributing to your irregular periods, consider implementing stress-reduction techniques such as yoga, meditation, or regular exercise. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet can support overall hormonal health.

4. Follow Up on Any Medications: If you are taking any medications, discuss them with your healthcare provider to determine if they could be influencing your menstrual cycle.

In summary, while a delayed period can be concerning, it is often caused by a variety of factors, many of which are manageable. Consulting with a healthcare provider will help you understand the underlying cause and determine the best course of action. Remember that your health is paramount, and seeking professional advice is always a wise decision when faced with changes in your body.
