Persistent dizziness?
Hello Dr.
Lin,
Since I moved in July, I have been experiencing a daily sensation of dizziness and a feeling of lightheadedness.
It's not the spinning type of dizziness, but rather a feeling of pressure in my head and difficulty concentrating.
Additionally, since the onset of this dizziness, my sleep quality has deteriorated.
Previously, I felt well-rested after 7 hours of sleep, but now even after 8 hours, I still feel tired.
I usually go to bed around 1 AM.
I previously consulted an ENT specialist who diagnosed me with inner ear imbalance.
After a month of treatment, there has been no improvement, and I still feel lightheaded.
Is this an indication of a health issue? I would appreciate your help in answering this question.
Thank you.
leike, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/10/18
Dr. Lin Mingxing reply Family Medicine
Dear Leike,
Regarding the persistent symptoms of dizziness and fatigue, one possible cause could be vestibular imbalance.
Additionally, it is important to consider whether there is any fatigue accumulation or injury in the cervical spine and the muscle groups of the head, neck, and shoulders that may be causing circulatory compression.
Furthermore, if liver and kidney functions are normal, previous health conditions such as good cardiac function or issues related to the endocrine system (including thyroid function and any menstrual irregularities) should also be taken into account.
Wishing you good health and all the best,

More Info
Persistent dizziness can be a frustrating and concerning symptom, especially when it affects your daily life and sleep quality. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing a sensation of lightheadedness or a feeling of pressure in your head since moving in July, along with a decline in your sleep quality. You mentioned that you have already consulted an ENT specialist who diagnosed you with inner ear imbalance but did not see improvement after a month of treatment.
Dizziness can arise from various causes, and understanding these can help in finding appropriate solutions. Here are some potential causes of your symptoms:
1. Vestibular Disorders: Since you have already seen an ENT specialist, it’s worth noting that inner ear issues, such as vestibular neuritis or benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), can lead to feelings of dizziness or imbalance. These conditions can sometimes resolve on their own, but physical therapy, specifically vestibular rehabilitation therapy, may be beneficial.
2. Anxiety and Stress: Moving can be a significant life change and can lead to increased stress and anxiety, which can manifest as physical symptoms, including dizziness. If you are feeling overwhelmed, it might be helpful to explore stress management techniques or speak with a mental health professional.
3. Sleep Disorders: You mentioned a decline in sleep quality, which can contribute to feelings of dizziness and fatigue. Conditions such as sleep apnea can disrupt sleep and lead to daytime drowsiness and dizziness. It may be beneficial to evaluate your sleep hygiene and consider a sleep study if necessary.
4. Dehydration or Nutritional Deficiencies: Changes in your routine, including diet and hydration, can affect your overall health. Ensure you are drinking enough water and consuming a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals. Deficiencies in vitamin B12, vitamin D, or iron can also lead to dizziness.
5. Medication Side Effects: If you are taking any medications, check with your healthcare provider to see if dizziness is a potential side effect. Some medications can affect balance and cause dizziness.
6. Neurological Conditions: While less common, persistent dizziness can sometimes indicate a neurological issue. If your symptoms continue or worsen, it may be prudent to consult a neurologist for further evaluation.
Given that your symptoms have persisted despite treatment, it would be advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further testing, such as blood tests to check for anemia or vitamin deficiencies, imaging studies to rule out any structural issues, or a referral to a specialist in neurology or a vestibular therapist.
In the meantime, consider keeping a symptom diary to track when your dizziness occurs, its duration, and any associated activities or triggers. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the underlying cause.
In conclusion, while persistent dizziness can be concerning, there are various potential causes, and many can be addressed with appropriate medical care and lifestyle adjustments. Don’t hesitate to seek further evaluation if your symptoms do not improve, as early intervention can lead to better outcomes.
