Persistent hair loss?
Hello, doctor.
I've been experiencing severe hair loss lately.
My hair falls out easily when I gently brush it, and I notice it also falls out during washing, even from the roots (there's a white bulb at the end).
I'm concerned if this will lead to baldness.
Which specialist should I see for hair loss, a dermatologist or another type of doctor? If my hair is falling out from the roots, will it grow back?

More Info
Severe hair loss can be a distressing experience, and it's important to understand the potential causes, treatment options, and when to seek professional help. Based on your description, it sounds like you are experiencing significant hair shedding, particularly at the roots, which can be concerning.
Causes of Severe Hair Loss
1. Genetic Factors: One of the most common causes of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness. This hereditary condition can lead to gradual thinning of hair and is often characterized by a receding hairline or thinning crown.
2. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, particularly those related to pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, or thyroid issues, can lead to temporary or permanent hair loss.
3. Medical Conditions: Conditions such as alopecia areata, which is an autoimmune disorder that causes patchy hair loss, or scalp infections like ringworm can also lead to significant hair loss.
4. Nutritional Deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients, particularly iron, protein, and vitamins such as B12 and D, can contribute to hair thinning and loss.
5. Stress: Physical or emotional stress can trigger a type of hair loss known as telogen effluvium, where hair follicles enter a resting phase and shed more hair than usual.
6. Scalp Conditions: Conditions like seborrheic dermatitis (seborrheic eczema), which is characterized by itchy, flaky skin on the scalp, can also lead to hair loss. This is often associated with oily skin and can cause inflammation that affects hair follicles.
When to See a Dermatologist
If you are experiencing severe hair loss, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as itching, redness, or flaking of the scalp, it is advisable to see a dermatologist. They can conduct a thorough examination of your scalp and hair, possibly perform blood tests to check for underlying conditions, and determine the best course of action.
Treatment Options
1. Topical Treatments: Minoxidil (Rogaine) is an over-the-counter topical treatment that can help stimulate hair growth and slow down hair loss. It is effective for both men and women.
2. Prescription Medications: Finasteride (Propecia) is a prescription medication for men that can help prevent hair loss by blocking the hormone responsible for shrinking hair follicles.
3. Lifestyle Changes: Improving your diet to include more vitamins and minerals, managing stress through relaxation techniques, and ensuring adequate sleep can all contribute to healthier hair.
4. Scalp Treatments: For conditions like seborrheic dermatitis, medicated shampoos containing ketoconazole or selenium sulfide can help reduce inflammation and flaking.
5. Hair Restoration Procedures: In cases of significant hair loss, hair transplant surgery may be an option. This involves moving hair follicles from a donor site to the balding areas of the scalp.
Prognosis
Regarding your concern about whether hair that is falling out from the roots will grow back, it largely depends on the underlying cause of the hair loss. If the hair follicles are still healthy and the cause of the shedding is addressed, there is a good chance that hair can regrow. However, if the follicles are damaged or if there is significant scarring, regrowth may be limited.
In conclusion, it is crucial to consult with a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so do not hesitate to seek help.
