Doctor, please help me!

Doctor, I am nineteen years old.
My flaccid length is about 2 centimeters, and my erect length is about 8 centimeters.
Is this normal? I have been masturbating almost daily since I was 11.
Does this have any impact? My foreskin seems quite long; would circumcision improve the situation? Also, I am overweight.
Regarding the length issue, can it be treated with medication? I feel really insecure.
Thank you for your detailed response, doctor.

A-Pang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/11/14

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

A-Pang: Hello, I’m not sure how you define length.
The correct measurement method is to measure from the base of the penis to the tip of the glans.
A large-scale study conducted in Taiwan yielded the following results: the average length of an erect penis among Taiwanese men is 11.39 centimeters, which is shorter than that of men in Europe and America.
Doctors say that the length of the penis in Taiwanese men is proportional to their height, but racial factors remain crucial; even at the same height, Taiwanese men tend to have shorter penises compared to their Western counterparts.
Dr.
Jian Bangping, an attending physician in the Department of Urology at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, published a formula for calculating the erect length of Taiwanese men's penises: height (in centimeters) multiplied by 0.06, plus 7.41, and then the resulting value multiplied by 0.65 gives the total length of the penis that is exposed when erect.
Obesity can lead to the misconception that the penis is short, as the length buried in fat is not accounted for.
Circumcision does not improve this situation.
The correct approach is to lose weight or undergo surgery to remove the fat at the base of the penis, exposing the entire length.
A standalone circumcision procedure will not achieve this goal.

When it comes to concerns about urological health, particularly regarding penis size, circumcision, and self-esteem, it's important to approach the topic with sensitivity and a clear understanding of the medical facts. First, let's address the size aspect.
At 19 years old, a penis size of 2 cm when flaccid and 8 cm when erect falls within a range that can be considered normal. It's crucial to remember that penis size varies significantly among individuals, and many factors, including genetics and hormonal influences during puberty, play a role in determining size. Research indicates that the average erect penis size is around 12 to 16 cm, but there is a wide range of what is considered normal. Therefore, while you may feel self-conscious about your size, it is essential to recognize that many men experience similar feelings, and size does not determine one's worth or ability to engage in intimate relationships.

Regarding your question about masturbation, it is a common activity among adolescents and young adults. Masturbation is generally considered a normal part of sexual development and does not have any adverse effects on penis size or sexual function. In fact, it can help individuals learn about their bodies and sexual responses. However, if you feel that your masturbation habits are excessive or interfering with your daily life, it might be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

As for your concerns about your foreskin, having a longer foreskin is not inherently problematic unless it causes discomfort or hygiene issues. If you are experiencing issues such as pain, recurrent infections, or difficulty retracting the foreskin, circumcision may be a viable option. Circumcision can sometimes help with hygiene and may alleviate any discomfort associated with a tight foreskin (phimosis). However, it is essential to consult with a urologist who can assess your specific situation and provide personalized advice.

Regarding the possibility of using medication to address size concerns, there are no medically approved medications that can significantly increase penis size. Some treatments claim to enhance size, but they often lack scientific backing and can carry risks of side effects. The best approach is to focus on overall health and well-being rather than seeking quick fixes.

Self-esteem issues related to body image are common, especially during adolescence and young adulthood. It is vital to cultivate a positive self-image and recognize that self-worth is not determined by physical attributes. Engaging in activities that promote self-confidence, such as exercise, pursuing hobbies, and building supportive relationships, can be beneficial. If feelings of self-doubt persist, consider speaking with a mental health professional who can help you navigate these feelings and develop healthier self-esteem.

In summary, your concerns about size, circumcision, and self-esteem are valid and shared by many. Understanding that variations in size are normal, recognizing the role of masturbation in sexual health, and seeking professional advice for any medical concerns are essential steps. Additionally, focusing on self-acceptance and building confidence can significantly improve your overall well-being. If you have further questions or concerns, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider who can offer guidance tailored to your needs.
