Is it accurate?
Hello Dr.
Lu, I am currently 7 weeks pregnant, almost 8 weeks, and there is already a heartbeat.
I am interested in having a blood test to check the gender.
Is it accurate if I have two vials of blood drawn, or if I have the test done twice? Has anyone experienced a failure with the blood test?
Qi Qi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/11/24
Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello: The accuracy of the testing unit's capabilities is crucial.
If it is a specialized center for chromosome testing, the accuracy can reach over 95%.
Whether drawing blood from one tube or two tubes for two separate draws should not make a difference.
Sincerely, Lu Li-Zheng.

Gender blood testing, often referred to as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), has gained popularity for its ability to determine the sex of a fetus early in pregnancy. Typically, this testing can be performed as early as 8 weeks gestation, and its accuracy is generally reported to be around 99% when conducted correctly. However, there are several factors to consider regarding the accuracy of these tests, especially in the context of your situation.
Firstly, the accuracy of gender blood testing can be influenced by various factors, including the quality of the sample collected, the laboratory's testing methods, and the presence of any maternal conditions that may affect the results. In most cases, if the test is performed by a reputable laboratory and the sample is handled properly, the results should be reliable. However, there are instances where false positives or false negatives can occur, leading to confusion about the fetus's sex.
Regarding your question about having the test done twice (drawing blood from two different vials), this is not uncommon. Some healthcare providers may choose to perform multiple tests to confirm results, especially if there is any doubt about the initial findings. However, it's essential to understand that the accuracy of the test does not necessarily improve with multiple draws; rather, it is the testing process and the laboratory's capabilities that primarily determine accuracy.
As for your concern about previous pregnancy loss, such as a natural miscarriage at 6 weeks, it generally should not affect the accuracy of a subsequent gender blood test. The fetal DNA that is analyzed in these tests comes from the current pregnancy, and any remnants from a previous pregnancy should not interfere with the results. However, if there are any complications or concerns about the current pregnancy, it is always best to discuss these with your healthcare provider.
In terms of the location of the gestational sac within the uterus, having it positioned lower does not inherently increase the risk of miscarriage or negatively impact fetal growth. Many pregnancies with a lower-lying gestational sac progress normally. However, if there are any specific concerns or symptoms, such as bleeding or severe cramping, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In summary, gender blood testing during early pregnancy is generally accurate, especially when performed after 8 weeks of gestation. While there can be occasional inaccuracies, the likelihood of receiving a correct result is high, particularly if the test is conducted by a reputable laboratory. Your previous miscarriage should not affect the outcome of the current test, and the position of the gestational sac is typically not a cause for concern unless accompanied by other symptoms. Always feel free to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance throughout your pregnancy journey.
