Strange cuticles at the edge of the nails?
Hello Doctor: I have noticed straight, shallow grooves on my toenail for over two years.
Recently, two thin, hair-like growths resembling polyps have developed at the U-shaped area above the grooves and the edge of the nail (approximately 0.3 cm in length and 0.05 cm in diameter, and they are sensitive to touch).
I attempted to remove them myself, but they bled, and they grew back a few months later.
I consulted a dermatologist, but the doctor was unsure of what it was and performed cryotherapy, but they grew back again after a few months.
I have not addressed the issue since, but I recently noticed that they are growing longer and thicker (approximately 0.5 cm in length and 0.1 cm in diameter, with a tapered shape near the edge of the nail).
Could you please advise me on what this condition might be and if there is a doctor in Tainan who specializes in this area? (I can send photos if needed).
Thank you.
Wishing you good health.

Hello Kao: Based on your written description, it is currently difficult to ascertain your specific condition.
The main characteristic of skin diseases is that "seeing is believing, and touching reveals texture." It is indeed challenging to convey a complete picture through text alone.
I recommend that when skin symptoms appear as described, you should promptly visit a public hospital in your city or county and consult with a dermatologist.
All the physicians at our department are very willing to assist you.

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing a concerning issue with your toenail, specifically with the appearance of linear grooves and the development of small protrusions that resemble polyps. While I cannot provide a definitive diagnosis without a physical examination, I can offer some insights into what you might be dealing with and suggest potential next steps.
The linear grooves you mentioned on your toenail could be a sign of a condition known as "Beau's lines." These lines are typically indicative of a temporary disruption in nail growth, which can occur due to various factors such as trauma, systemic illness, or nutritional deficiencies. The presence of these grooves suggests that there may have been a significant event affecting your body’s ability to produce healthy nail tissue.
As for the small protrusions that have developed at the edge of your toenail, they could be a few different things. One possibility is that they are benign growths, such as a fibroma or a dermatofibroma, which are common skin lesions that can occur in various areas of the body, including around the nails. Another possibility is that they could be a form of nail matrix or nail bed irritation, leading to abnormal growths. Given that you have attempted to remove them and they have bled, it is crucial to avoid self-removal, as this can lead to infection or further complications.
The fact that these growths have persisted despite treatment, such as cryotherapy, suggests that they may require a more targeted approach. It is essential to consult with a dermatologist who specializes in nail disorders. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend a biopsy if there is any suspicion of a more serious condition. This will help in determining the exact nature of the growths and the best course of action for treatment.
In terms of finding a specialist in Tainan, I recommend looking for a dermatologist with experience in nail disorders. You can check local hospital directories or dermatology clinics and look for reviews or recommendations from other patients. It may also be helpful to inquire if they have experience with similar cases, as this can provide you with more confidence in their ability to address your concerns.
In summary, while the symptoms you describe could be benign, it is crucial to seek professional medical advice to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Avoid self-treatment, as this can lead to complications. A dermatologist will be able to provide you with the best care and guidance moving forward. I wish you the best in resolving this issue and hope for a swift return to health.
