Blisters on the glans?

Hello doctor, I have a blister on the right side of my urethra on the glans.
I previously showed it to a doctor, who said I could either undergo a minor surgery or use a syringe to aspirate the fluid; I chose the latter.
However, after the aspiration, it gradually started to enlarge again over the course of two to three weeks, and now it is almost identical to how it was before.
This blister is not painful, but I find it quite strange.
Is there any way to make it go away? Or could it be due to some of my habits that are causing it to keep enlarging? Thank you!

anony, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/12/10

The doctor from last time has already been consulted, and I am looking for him to handle it.

Blisters on the glans, particularly those that are painless and recurrent, can be concerning for many individuals. Understanding the potential causes and treatment options is essential for effective management.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that blisters on the glans can arise from various factors. Common causes include:
1. Infections: Viral infections, such as herpes simplex virus, can lead to the formation of blisters. However, these typically present with pain and other symptoms. Fungal infections can also cause blister-like lesions.

2. Irritation or Allergic Reactions: Contact dermatitis due to soaps, lotions, or latex from condoms can cause blistering. If you’ve recently changed any personal care products or sexual partners, this could be a factor.

3. Cysts: A common cause of painless blisters in this area is a sebaceous cyst. These are benign and can appear as small, fluid-filled sacs. They may not cause pain but can grow over time.

4. Pearly Penile Papules: These are small, painless bumps that can appear on the glans and are normal anatomical variations. They are not harmful and do not require treatment.

5. Other Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as lichen planus or psoriasis can also manifest as blistering lesions on the genital area.

Given your situation, where the blister has recurred after aspiration, it may suggest that the underlying cause has not been addressed. Here are some treatment options and recommendations:
1. Observation: If the blister is not causing pain or discomfort, and if it is not increasing in size rapidly, a watchful waiting approach may be appropriate. Many benign conditions can resolve on their own.

2. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that the blister may be due to irritation or an allergic reaction, consider eliminating potential irritants. Use mild, fragrance-free soaps and avoid any products that may cause a reaction.

3. Surgical Intervention: If the blister continues to recur and is bothersome, surgical options may be considered. This could involve excision of the cyst or lesion, which can provide a more permanent solution than aspiration.

4. Consultation with a Specialist: If the condition persists, it may be beneficial to see a urologist or dermatologist who specializes in genital conditions. They can provide a more thorough examination and may perform a biopsy if necessary to rule out any serious conditions.

5. Maintain Good Hygiene: Keeping the area clean and dry can help prevent infections and irritation. Avoid tight clothing that may cause friction.

6. Follow-Up Care: Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider can help monitor the condition and ensure that it does not develop into something more serious.

In conclusion, while blisters on the glans can be benign, it is essential to monitor their characteristics and any associated symptoms. If the blister continues to grow or change, or if you develop new symptoms, seeking further medical evaluation is crucial. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing any concerns with a healthcare professional will provide you with the best course of action.
