Dizziness
Two days ago, I woke up in the morning and had a cup of hot chocolate.
After sitting in front of the computer for about an hour, I decided to stand up and stretch.
When I raised my hand to the highest point, my vision suddenly became blurry and I experienced a blackout.
At that moment, I was right next to my bed and fell back onto it.
I felt like I lost consciousness for just a few seconds.
After lying down for a bit, I got up and felt fine, but it really scared me since it was the first time this happened.
I initially thought it might be due to low blood sugar, but I had just had hot cocoa an hour earlier.
I'm not sure if this is related to my body type being on the thinner side or if I have poor circulation, as my hands and feet are often cold.
I am 160 cm tall and weigh 41.2 kg, and I tend to eat a lot, but my digestion isn't great, so I don't gain much weight.
Recently, I've sometimes felt a dull headache, but it doesn't affect my normal life, and I haven't experienced any more episodes of blackout.
Should I just let it resolve on its own since it was only severe this one time? I sometimes feel dizzy after sitting for a long time or when I wake up, but I think the severity is similar to what many people experience; it seems like an isolated incident.
Do I need to see a doctor, or is it related to my being underweight? Should I focus on trying to gain weight?

Dear Miss Chang, I suspect that your dizziness may be caused by mild anemia, or it could simply be due to maintaining a fixed posture for too long, leading to a postural reflex.
I recommend that you visit a family medicine clinic for a blood test.
Additionally, after prolonged computer use, you should rise slowly to avoid dizziness.
This should not be directly related to being underweight.
Wishing you good health and well-being.
Sincerely,
Hsu Li-An

Dizziness can be a concerning symptom, especially when it leads to visual disturbances or loss of consciousness, as you described. Your experience of feeling lightheaded and having blurred vision after sitting for an extended period, followed by a brief loss of consciousness, warrants careful consideration.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that dizziness can arise from various causes, including but not limited to dehydration, low blood sugar, orthostatic hypotension (a drop in blood pressure when standing up), or even anxiety. Given that you mentioned feeling faint after sitting for a while and then standing up, it could be related to a sudden drop in blood pressure, which is not uncommon, especially if you have been sitting for a long time.
Your mention of having cold extremities and a low body weight (41.2 kg at 160 cm) could suggest that your body might not be efficiently regulating blood flow or blood pressure. Individuals who are underweight or have a low body mass index (BMI) may experience symptoms like dizziness more frequently, particularly if they are not consuming enough calories or nutrients to support their energy needs.
While you mentioned that this was a one-time occurrence and that you felt fine afterward, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience dizziness again, especially if it is accompanied by other symptoms such as palpitations, chest pain, severe headache, or prolonged loss of consciousness, you should seek medical attention immediately.
Moreover, since you have also noted that you sometimes feel "dull" in your head and experience dizziness when sitting for long periods or upon waking, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional. They can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include checking your blood pressure in different positions (lying down, sitting, and standing), assessing your blood sugar levels, and possibly conducting blood tests to rule out any underlying conditions such as anemia or thyroid issues.
In terms of lifestyle modifications, ensuring that you are well-hydrated and consuming a balanced diet rich in nutrients can help improve your overall health and potentially alleviate some of your symptoms. Regular meals and snacks can help maintain stable blood sugar levels, which may reduce the likelihood of experiencing dizziness.
In conclusion, while it may be tempting to dismiss this incident as a one-off event, it is advisable to err on the side of caution. If symptoms persist or worsen, or if you experience new symptoms, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. A healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause of your dizziness and recommend appropriate treatment or lifestyle changes to improve your condition.
