Can pregnant women drink Angelica, Goji berry, and Jujube tea?

Hello, doctor.
My menstrual cycle started on November 4 and November 30, with ovulation around December 11.
My husband and I had intercourse, but it's too early to confirm if I am pregnant.
Can I drink a tea made with Angelica sinensis, Astragalus membranaceus, goji berries, and red dates during this period? If I confirm that I am pregnant, is it still safe to drink? Since it's winter and I often have cold hands and feet, I would like to consume something to boost my energy and improve my health.
This is my first pregnancy, and I'm worried about consuming the wrong things! Additionally, my husband has recently caught a cold and has a cough with white phlegm.
Is it safe for him to drink this tea? The herbal shop suggested adding some lily bulbs for his bronchial issues.
Can pregnant women use lily bulbs? Thank you!

Dr. Peng Peilun reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

In principle, if pregnant, Huangqi (Astragalus), Goji berries, and red dates can be consumed.
A small amount of Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis) may be used, but it is not advisable to use Lily (Lilium) if experiencing cold, fever, or sore throat.
Pregnant women can consume Lily.

During pregnancy, it is crucial to maintain a balanced diet and ensure adequate hydration. Pregnant women often have specific dietary restrictions and considerations, especially regarding herbal teas and supplements. Your question about drinking Angelica, Goji Berry, and Jujube tea is quite relevant, especially for those looking to manage symptoms like cold hands and feet during winter.

Angelica (Dong Quai) is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for its purported benefits in promoting blood circulation and alleviating menstrual discomfort. However, it is essential to note that Angelica is often contraindicated during pregnancy due to its potential to stimulate uterine contractions. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid Angelica tea during pregnancy.

Goji berries are generally considered safe and are often praised for their antioxidant properties. They can be beneficial for overall health, but moderation is key. It is always best to consult with a healthcare provider before incorporating any new food or supplement into your diet during pregnancy.

Jujube (red dates) is commonly consumed during pregnancy and is known for its nourishing properties. It is often used to help improve blood circulation and boost energy levels. Jujube tea can be a comforting option, especially during colder months, and is generally safe for pregnant women.

Regarding your question about drinking the tea during the early stages of pregnancy, if you are unsure whether you are pregnant, it is best to err on the side of caution. Once pregnancy is confirmed, you should consult your healthcare provider about the safety of consuming specific herbal teas, including those containing Angelica.

As for your husband's condition, it is essential to be cautious about herbal remedies when one partner is ill, especially during pregnancy. While some herbs, like lily bulb (百合), are known for their soothing properties and can be beneficial for respiratory issues, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before using them during pregnancy. Some herbs can have contraindications or may not be suitable for pregnant women.

In summary, while Goji berries and Jujube are generally safe and can be beneficial during pregnancy, Angelica should be avoided. Always consult with your healthcare provider before consuming herbal teas or supplements, especially during pregnancy, to ensure the safety of both you and your developing baby. Staying hydrated is also vital; aim for at least 6-8 cups of fluids daily, primarily water, to support your health and the health of your baby.
