A hard lump on the head is painful when pressed?

A few days ago, I suddenly noticed a hard lump on the back left side of my head.
It doesn't hurt unless I press on it, and it feels firm to the touch.
I haven't experienced any trauma to the area, and it has been 5 days since I discovered it.
There are no signs of swelling reduction, and I'm worried it might be something serious.
Could you please help me understand what this might be, Doctor?

Dr. Li Junde reply Surgery

Hello Miss Miumiu: You have a hard lump on the occipital region that is tender and has been present for 5 days.
It may be caused by inflammation (such as folliculitis) or tumors of the skin, subcutaneous tissue, or bone.
It is advisable to consult a general surgeon for a proper evaluation.

The presence of a painful hard lump on the back of your head can be concerning, especially if it has persisted for several days without any signs of improvement. While I cannot provide a definitive diagnosis without a physical examination, I can offer some insights into potential causes and considerations regarding your symptoms.

One common cause of a hard lump on the head is a sebaceous cyst. These are non-cancerous lumps that can form when a hair follicle becomes blocked. They are usually painless unless they become inflamed or infected, at which point they can become tender to the touch. Sebaceous cysts are typically movable under the skin and can vary in size.

Another possibility is a lipoma, which is a benign tumor made up of fatty tissue. Lipomas are generally soft and movable, but they can sometimes feel firm depending on their location and the surrounding tissue. They are usually painless unless they press on nearby nerves or structures.

If the lump is painful and hard, it could also be a lymph node that has become enlarged due to an infection or inflammation in the area. Lymph nodes can swell in response to various conditions, including infections, and can be tender to the touch.
In some cases, a hematoma can form after a minor injury that you may not have noticed, leading to a collection of blood outside of blood vessels. This can create a hard lump that may be painful, especially if it is pressing on surrounding tissues.

Given your concern about the lump not showing signs of improvement after five days, it is essential to consider the following:
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any changes in size, shape, or tenderness of the lump. Note if you develop any additional symptoms such as fever, headaches, or changes in vision.

2. Avoid Manipulation: Try not to press or manipulate the lump excessively, as this can lead to irritation or infection.

3. Seek Medical Evaluation: It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a neurologist or a dermatologist, for a thorough evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to determine the nature of the lump.

4. Consider Other Symptoms: If you experience any neurological symptoms, such as dizziness, weakness, or changes in consciousness, seek immediate medical attention.

In summary, while there are several benign explanations for a hard lump on the back of the head, it is crucial to have it evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions. Early diagnosis and management can help alleviate your concerns and ensure appropriate treatment if necessary.
