Nasal issues
Hello Dr.
Yeh, my sister has a history of allergies.
Recently, she has been very fatigued, has had insufficient sleep, and caught a cold.
I've noticed that her nasal mucus has blood in it.
Could this be simply due to broken capillaries, or could there be other reasons? Does she need medication for this, or are there non-medication options, such as topical treatments? Thank you!

It is possible that excessive force while blowing your nose has caused a rupture of small blood vessels, leading to bleeding.
It is recommended to visit the outpatient clinic for an endoscopic examination to rule out other potential causes.

Nosebleeds, medically known as epistaxis, can be a concerning symptom, especially when they occur frequently or are accompanied by other symptoms. Understanding the causes and treatment options is essential for managing this condition effectively.
Causes of Nosebleeds
Nosebleeds can arise from various factors, and in your sister's case, several potential causes may be contributing to her symptoms:
1. Allergies: Allergic rhinitis can lead to nasal inflammation, which may cause the blood vessels in the nasal passages to become more fragile and prone to bleeding.
2. Environmental Factors: Dry air, especially during winter months or in air-conditioned environments, can dry out the nasal membranes, leading to cracks and bleeding.
3. Infections: Upper respiratory infections, such as colds or sinusitis, can irritate the nasal passages and lead to nosebleeds.
4. Trauma: Frequent nose blowing, especially when the nose is congested, can cause minor trauma to the delicate blood vessels in the nasal lining.
5. Medications: Certain medications, particularly blood thinners or nasal sprays, can increase the likelihood of bleeding.
6. Underlying Health Conditions: Conditions such as hypertension or clotting disorders can also contribute to nosebleeds.
Treatment Options
For your sister, given her history of allergies and recent symptoms, here are some treatment options to consider:
1. Home Care:
- Humidification: Using a humidifier in her room can help maintain moisture in the air, preventing the nasal membranes from drying out.
- Saline Nasal Spray: Regular use of saline sprays can keep the nasal passages moist and help prevent bleeding.
- Nasal Gels: Over-the-counter nasal gels can also provide moisture and protect the nasal lining.
2. Avoiding Irritants: Encourage her to avoid allergens and irritants, such as smoke or strong odors, which can exacerbate her symptoms.
3. Gentle Nose Blowing: Advise her to blow her nose gently to avoid trauma to the nasal passages.
4. Positioning: If a nosebleed occurs, she should sit up straight and lean slightly forward. This position helps prevent blood from flowing down the throat and reduces the risk of swallowing blood.
5. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the nose can constrict blood vessels and help stop the bleeding.
6. Medication: If her nosebleeds are frequent or severe, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider. They may recommend topical treatments, such as a nasal steroid spray, to reduce inflammation and bleeding.
7. When to Seek Medical Attention: If the nosebleeds persist, are heavy, or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms (such as dizziness or excessive fatigue), it is crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can evaluate her condition and determine if further investigation or treatment is necessary.
Conclusion
In summary, while occasional nosebleeds can be common and often benign, it is essential to monitor the frequency and severity of your sister's symptoms. Given her history of allergies and recent illness, it is likely that environmental factors and nasal irritation are contributing to her nosebleeds. Implementing home care strategies and avoiding irritants can be effective in managing her symptoms. However, if the problem persists or worsens, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable to rule out any underlying conditions and discuss appropriate treatment options.
