Feeling of Obstruction in One Nostril: When to See an ENT Specialist? - Otolaryngology

Feeling of a foreign body in the nasal cavity?

Hello, doctor! For the past week, I've been feeling like there's something in my right nostril.
It feels like there's a booger stuck inside, based on the sensation when I inhale and exhale, as well as the sound of air entering my nasal cavity.
This feeling is different from the nasal congestion caused by a cold.
My breathing feels relatively clear, but I have this sensation of something lodged in my right nostril that I can't seem to remove.
I would like to ask if I should see an otolaryngologist, and is it possible that this could be something concerning?

Chris, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/01/28

Dr. Xu Jiazhen reply Otolaryngology

Hello: In response to your question, it is best to remove nasal foreign bodies when they are visible, as the nasal mucosa is very delicate and can easily bleed profusely if injured.
We need to identify what the object is before proceeding with removal, so I recommend that you visit an otolaryngologist for further evaluation.

More Info

If you have been experiencing a sensation of obstruction in one nostril, particularly if it feels like something is lodged there, it is advisable to consult an ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) specialist. While it may seem like a minor issue, there are several potential underlying causes that warrant professional evaluation.

Possible Causes of Nasal Obstruction
1. Nasal Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths that can develop in the nasal passages or sinuses due to chronic inflammation. They can cause a feeling of obstruction and may require medical or surgical treatment.

2. Deviated Septum: A deviation in the nasal septum can lead to one side of the nasal passage being narrower, which can create a sensation of obstruction. This condition can be diagnosed through a physical examination or imaging studies.

3. Foreign Body: Although less common in adults, a foreign object can sometimes become lodged in the nasal cavity, leading to discomfort and obstruction. This is more frequently seen in children but should not be ruled out in adults.

4. Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses can lead to a feeling of pressure or obstruction in the nasal passages. This can be acute or chronic and may require treatment depending on the severity.

5. Allergic Rhinitis: Allergies can cause swelling and mucus production in the nasal passages, leading to a sensation of blockage. If you have a history of allergies, this could be a contributing factor.

6. Infection: A viral or bacterial infection can lead to swelling and mucus buildup, causing a feeling of obstruction. If accompanied by other symptoms such as fever or facial pain, this may indicate a more serious condition.

When to See an ENT Specialist
You should consider seeing an ENT specialist if:
- The sensation persists for more than a week without improvement.

- You experience additional symptoms such as pain, swelling, or discharge from the nostril.

- You have a history of nasal issues, such as frequent sinus infections or allergies.

- You notice changes in your sense of smell or taste.

- You have difficulty breathing through the affected nostril.

What to Expect During the Visit
During your appointment, the ENT specialist will likely perform a thorough examination, which may include:
- Nasal Endoscopy: A thin, flexible tube with a camera will be inserted into your nostril to provide a clear view of the nasal passages and sinuses.

- Imaging Studies: In some cases, a CT scan may be ordered to get a detailed view of the sinuses and nasal structures.

- Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected, the doctor may recommend tests to identify specific allergens.

Conclusion
While the sensation of obstruction in one nostril may not seem alarming, it is essential to seek medical advice to rule out any serious conditions. Early intervention can lead to more effective treatment and prevent potential complications. If you have any concerns or if the sensation worsens, do not hesitate to make an appointment with an ENT specialist. Your health and comfort are paramount, and addressing these symptoms promptly can lead to better outcomes.
