Are there brainwave monitoring devices available for rent?
Since I had a grand mal seizure at the age of 16, I have been on medication, specifically Tegretol 200 mg extended-release.
Initially, I took two tablets twice a day, but now I take one tablet twice a day.
During this time, I underwent an EEG, and the results from a year and a half ago were completely normal.
I initially planned to reduce my medication, but it seemed that my sleep became somewhat unstable at night, so I resumed taking one tablet twice a day.
Two months ago, my blood tests showed everything was normal, and the drug concentration in my blood was just above the minimum effective level.
I plan to try reducing my medication again during the summer vacation when I return to Taiwan.
To accurately monitor my condition after reducing the medication, I would like to ask the doctor if there are any options in Taiwan for renting equipment that can monitor brain waves, so I can effectively track my EEG status during the reduction period.
If available, what options are there, and where can I rent such equipment? Thank you for your assistance.

Dr. Huang Yingzhe reply Neurology
Dear Xiaomi,
According to my knowledge, there is currently no simple and reliable device that allows patients to self-use and detect abnormalities.
Electroencephalography (EEG) only holds clinical reliability after interpretation by a physician who has undergone extensive training.
Wishing you good health and all the best.
Sincerely,
Dr.

More Info
In Taiwan, the availability of renting EEG (electroencephalogram) monitoring equipment for personal use, particularly for medication management, is quite limited. As per the information provided by medical professionals, there are no reliable and user-friendly devices available for patients to independently monitor their brain waves at home. EEG monitoring typically requires specialized equipment and trained personnel to interpret the results accurately, which is crucial for clinical reliability.
For individuals like yourself, who have a history of seizures and are considering medication adjustments, it is essential to have professional oversight during this process. While you may wish to monitor your brain activity during medication reduction, the best approach is to do so under the guidance of a neurologist or an epilepsy specialist. They can provide you with the necessary evaluations and ensure that any changes in your medication regimen are safe and appropriate.
If you are looking to monitor your EEG during your stay in Taiwan, your best option would be to consult with a local hospital or a specialized clinic that offers EEG services. Many hospitals in Taiwan have neurology departments that can conduct EEG tests and provide you with the necessary follow-up care. You can schedule an appointment for an EEG test to assess your brain activity, especially if you are considering reducing your medication.
In terms of specific locations, major hospitals in cities like Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung typically have the facilities for EEG monitoring. You might want to contact hospitals such as National Taiwan University Hospital or Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, as they are well-equipped and have experienced staff who can assist you.
Additionally, if you are interested in home monitoring options, there are some consumer-grade EEG devices available on the market. However, these devices are generally not intended for medical use and may not provide the level of accuracy required for managing a condition like epilepsy. If you choose to explore these options, it is crucial to discuss them with your healthcare provider to ensure they align with your treatment plan.
In summary, while renting EEG equipment for personal use in Taiwan is not feasible, you can seek professional EEG monitoring through local hospitals. This will provide you with the most accurate and clinically relevant information regarding your brain activity as you consider adjusting your medication. Always prioritize professional medical guidance when managing conditions like epilepsy, as it can significantly impact your health and well-being.
