Symptoms related to the nose and throat?

My mother has been suffering from long-term nasal and throat-related diseases.
According to her, she experiences symptoms similar to nasal bleeding, where blood comes from her throat and occasionally results in a nosebleed.
However, most of the time, there is blood in her throat, and she is afraid to swallow it, so she has to cough it out.
This symptom has troubled her for several years! She has seen various specialists in different hospitals, but there has been no improvement.
What should we do? Could you also provide information on authoritative and experienced physicians for my mother to consult?

Xiao Hai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/02/27

Dr. Jian Huangqi reply Otolaryngology

Nasal blood reflux, nosebleeds, and blood in the throat indicate the presence of a bleeding point.
It is essential to identify the source of the bleeding and treat it accordingly for natural healing.
You may visit a medical center for a detailed examination.
Thank you.

Understanding symptoms related to nose and throat issues can be quite complex, especially when dealing with chronic conditions. Your mother’s experience with symptoms such as blood coming from the throat and occasional nosebleeds is concerning and warrants a thorough evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional.

The symptoms you describe could be indicative of several underlying conditions. One possibility is chronic rhinitis or sinusitis, where inflammation of the nasal passages leads to increased mucus production and potential bleeding. This can occur due to allergies, infections, or irritants in the environment. When the nasal passages are inflamed, it can lead to post-nasal drip, where mucus drips down the back of the throat, potentially causing irritation and bleeding.

Another potential cause could be nasal polyps or other structural abnormalities in the nasal cavity. These growths can obstruct airflow and lead to chronic inflammation, which may result in bleeding. Additionally, conditions such as hypertension or blood clotting disorders can contribute to recurrent nosebleeds.

It is also important to consider the possibility of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, potentially causing irritation and bleeding in the throat. This can sometimes be mistaken for nasal bleeding, especially if the blood is coughed up.

Given that your mother has seen multiple specialists without improvement, it may be beneficial to seek a second opinion from an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist) who can perform a comprehensive evaluation. This may include a physical examination, imaging studies such as a CT scan of the sinuses, and possibly endoscopy to visualize the nasal passages and throat directly.

In the meantime, there are some general recommendations that may help alleviate symptoms:
1. Humidification: Using a humidifier in the home can help keep the nasal passages moist, reducing irritation and the likelihood of bleeding.

2. Nasal Saline Rinse: Regularly using a saline nasal spray or rinse can help clear mucus and allergens from the nasal passages, potentially reducing inflammation.

3. Avoid Irritants: Encourage your mother to avoid smoking, strong odors, and other environmental irritants that could exacerbate her symptoms.

4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can help thin mucus and promote better drainage from the nasal passages.

5. Dietary Considerations: If GERD is a concern, dietary changes such as avoiding spicy foods, caffeine, and large meals before bedtime may help reduce symptoms.

6. Medication Review: If your mother is taking any medications, it may be worth reviewing them with her healthcare provider to determine if any could be contributing to her symptoms.

As for finding a qualified physician, I recommend checking with local medical boards or hospital networks for reputable ENT specialists. Online reviews and patient testimonials can also provide insight into a physician's experience and approach to care.

In summary, while the symptoms your mother is experiencing are concerning, a thorough evaluation by a qualified ENT specialist is crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Encourage her to seek further medical advice and explore the recommendations mentioned above to help manage her symptoms in the meantime.
