Labial itching

Hello, doctor.
On March 7th, I experienced extreme itching in the genital area, to the point where I scratched my skin.
Upon inspection, I noticed a faint row of small bumps near the labia, close to the clitoris (they are palpable), but I couldn't clearly see their color or shape.
On March 8th, the symptoms slightly improved.
I have a steady partner (my first boyfriend) and I soaked in a hot spring on March 2nd.
I checked common issues and I'm worried it might be genital warts (which frightens me).
Since I am currently on my menstrual period (day 5), should I see a doctor immediately, or is it better to wait until after my period ends (which lasts about 7-8 days) for a cleaner examination? Thank you, doctor!

Hello: Itching and skin breakdown of the labia, especially during menstruation, can make the condition difficult to treat.
It is best to see a doctor.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Labial itching, particularly when accompanied by other symptoms such as bumps or lesions, can be concerning and warrants careful evaluation. There are several potential causes for labial itching, including infections, irritations, and dermatological conditions. Understanding these causes, symptoms, and when to seek medical help is crucial for effective management.

Common Causes of Labial Itching
1. Infections:
- Yeast Infections: These are common and can cause intense itching, redness, and a thick, white discharge.
- Bacterial Vaginosis: This condition can lead to itching and an unusual discharge, often with a fishy odor.

- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Conditions like herpes, genital warts (caused by HPV), and trichomoniasis can cause itching and lesions in the genital area.

2. Irritation:
- Allergic Reactions: Products such as soaps, detergents, or personal hygiene products can irritate the sensitive skin of the vulva.

- Physical Irritation: Tight clothing, excessive sweating, or friction from sexual activity can also lead to itching.

3. Dermatological Conditions:
- Lichen Sclerosus: A chronic condition that can cause white patches and itching.

- Psoriasis or Eczema: These skin conditions can also affect the genital area, leading to itching and discomfort.

Symptoms to Watch For
In addition to itching, other symptoms that may accompany labial itching include:
- Redness or swelling
- Pain or discomfort
- Unusual discharge (color, consistency, or odor)
- Bumps, blisters, or lesions

When to Seek Help
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention, especially since you have noticed bumps near the clitoris and have experienced severe itching that led to skin damage. Here are some guidelines on when to see a doctor:
- Immediate Attention: If you experience severe pain, fever, or if the itching is unbearable, you should seek medical help immediately.

- Persistent Symptoms: If the itching and bumps do not improve within a few days or worsen, it is important to consult a healthcare provider.

- New or Unusual Symptoms: Any new symptoms, such as bleeding, significant swelling, or changes in discharge, should prompt a visit to a healthcare professional.

Timing of the Appointment
Regarding your question about whether to wait until after your menstrual period to see a doctor, it is generally better to seek medical attention sooner rather than later, especially if the symptoms are severe. While it is true that some examinations may be easier when you are not menstruating, your health and comfort should take priority. If you are experiencing significant discomfort, it is advisable to make an appointment as soon as possible.

Conclusion
Labial itching can be caused by a variety of factors, and while some may resolve on their own, others may require medical intervention. Given your symptoms, including the presence of bumps and severe itching, it is important to consult a healthcare provider promptly. They can provide a proper diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to your specific situation. Remember, early intervention can help prevent complications and provide relief from discomfort.

Acute vulvitis should not be treated with petroleum jelly; instead, antifungal ointments and oral antifungal medications or analgesic anti-inflammatory drugs should be used (scratching may lead to secondary infections).
