Axillary pain
Hello Dr.
Lai, I would like to ask you about a symptom I've been experiencing.
A week before my menstrual period, my breasts tend to be more swollen.
However, in the past two months, I've also noticed some pain in my right armpit in addition to this.
Is this a normal phenomenon? Thank you for taking the time to respond.

Dr. Lai Jihong reply Surgery
Hello! The breast swelling you mentioned a week before menstruation is a normal phenomenon due to hormonal influences.
Generally, after ovulation, the body instinctively prepares for implantation, which causes the breasts to be affected by hormones, leading to increased secretion in the mammary glands and potential milk accumulation, resulting in a feeling of breast swelling.
Regarding the pain in your right armpit, it is important to determine if it coincides with the changes in your breasts.
If it does, it could possibly be accessory breast tissue.
Additionally, it is essential to rule out other types of tumors, such as sebaceous cysts (commonly known as lipomas) or fibromas.
I recommend consulting a general surgeon or a breast specialist for further evaluation.
Wishing you good health! ^_^

Underarm pain, particularly in relation to the menstrual cycle, can be a common concern for many individuals. It is important to understand the physiological changes that occur in the body during the menstrual cycle, as well as the potential causes of pain in the underarm area.
Before menstruation, many women experience a range of symptoms due to hormonal fluctuations, particularly the increase in estrogen and progesterone. These hormones can lead to breast tenderness and swelling, which you have already noted. However, the experience of pain in the underarm area can also be linked to several factors.
1. Hormonal Changes: Just as breast tissue can become tender and swollen, the lymph nodes in the underarm area can also react to hormonal changes. The breasts and underarm areas are interconnected through lymphatic drainage, and hormonal fluctuations can lead to temporary swelling or discomfort in the lymph nodes, which may manifest as pain.
2. Muscle Strain: Sometimes, pain in the underarm can be attributed to muscle strain or overuse, especially if you have engaged in activities that involve lifting or repetitive arm movements. This can lead to soreness that may be mistaken for hormonal pain.
3. Cysts or Fibrocystic Changes: Some women develop cysts in the breast or underarm area, which can become more pronounced before menstruation. These cysts can cause localized pain and discomfort.
4. Infection or Inflammation: In some cases, pain in the underarm area may be due to an infection, such as a skin infection or inflammation of the lymph nodes (lymphadenitis). If the pain is persistent, accompanied by swelling, redness, or fever, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
5. Breast Conditions: Conditions such as fibrocystic breast changes or even benign tumors can cause pain that radiates to the underarm area. If you notice any unusual lumps or persistent pain, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
In your case, since you have experienced this pain for the past two months alongside the typical breast swelling, it may be related to the hormonal changes associated with your menstrual cycle. However, if the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as a lump, significant swelling, or changes in skin texture, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination.
In summary, while some discomfort in the underarm area before your period can be normal due to hormonal changes, it is essential to monitor the symptoms. If you have any concerns or if the pain is affecting your daily life, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for personalized advice and potential diagnostic tests. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly.
