Eye pain often occurs when seeing yellow light against a white background?
Hello, I have a vision of 1.0 in both eyes and I am experiencing presbyopia.
Recently, I often feel eye pain, and when looking at white walls or white bathroom tiles, I see a yellow flash.
Could you please explain why this is happening? Thank you, Judy.

Dr. Ke Meilan reply Ophthalmology
Hello: Presbyopia should be corrected with glasses.
To allow the eyes to rest, it is important to consider that the vitreous may be pulling on the retina.
It is best to consult a physician to check for any potential retinal tears.
Sincerely, Dr.

Hello Judy,
Thank you for your question regarding your experience with eye pain and the perception of yellow light against a white background. Your symptoms are indeed concerning and warrant a deeper understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved.
Firstly, it is important to recognize that the human eye is highly sensitive to light and color. The perception of color can be influenced by various factors, including the type of light source, the condition of the eye, and even the surrounding environment. In your case, the white walls or tiles may reflect a significant amount of light, which can lead to discomfort, especially if you are experiencing eye strain or fatigue.
The phenomenon of seeing a yellow flash or tint when looking at bright white surfaces could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is related to the way your eyes are processing light. When exposed to bright light, the photoreceptors in your retina (rods and cones) can become overstimulated, leading to temporary visual disturbances. This overstimulation can sometimes cause a shift in color perception, resulting in the appearance of yellow or other colors.
Additionally, your mention of having presbyopia (commonly known as "old sight") suggests that your eyes may be experiencing difficulty focusing, particularly on close objects. This condition can lead to eye strain, especially if you are not using corrective lenses when needed. Prolonged periods of focusing on bright surfaces without adequate visual support can exacerbate discomfort and may lead to symptoms such as eye pain, fatigue, and even headaches.
Another important consideration is the possibility of underlying eye conditions. For instance, if there is any issue with the vitreous gel in your eye pulling on the retina, it could lead to visual disturbances, including flashes of light or changes in color perception. It is crucial to rule out any retinal issues, such as tears or detachment, which can be serious and require immediate attention.
Moreover, the environment in which you are working or spending time can also play a role. Bright, fluorescent lighting or high-contrast environments can contribute to visual discomfort and fatigue. If you are frequently exposed to such conditions, it may be beneficial to take regular breaks, adjust your lighting, or use anti-reflective coatings on your glasses to reduce glare.
In summary, your experience of seeing yellow flashes against white backgrounds, coupled with eye pain, could be a result of several factors, including light sensitivity, eye strain due to presbyopia, and potential underlying eye conditions. It is highly advisable to consult with an eye care professional for a comprehensive eye examination. They can assess your visual acuity, check for any retinal issues, and provide personalized recommendations to alleviate your symptoms.
In the meantime, consider implementing some eye care practices, such as the 20-20-20 rule (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), ensuring proper lighting in your environment, and using appropriate corrective lenses as needed. Taking these steps can help reduce eye strain and improve your overall visual comfort.
Best wishes for your eye health,
