Testicular issues?
Hello, doctor! Recently, I noticed that there seems to be a prominent blood vessel on my left testicle.
I'm not sure what the issue is.
Is there any way I can self-treat this? Are there any precautions I should take? About three months ago, I visited a doctor who diagnosed me with a varicocele in my left testicle.
However, he mentioned it wasn't serious and prescribed some medication, saying it would resolve itself over time.
Could it have worsened?
Qing, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/04/23
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Hello: Varicocele generally occurs on the left side.
In your case, it seems to have worsened, so it is best to consult a physician again.
Note: The principles for surgical intervention in varicocele are as follows: 1.
It affects semen quality, which impacts fertility.
2.
Pain that cannot be controlled by medication or is inconvenient for medication treatment.
3.
Occurrence on the right side or suspicion of an intra-abdominal tumor or other abnormalities.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Varicocele is a condition characterized by the enlargement of veins within the scrotum, similar to varicose veins that can occur in the legs. It is most commonly found on the left side due to anatomical differences in venous drainage. The symptoms can vary, and while some individuals may not experience any noticeable symptoms, others may report discomfort, a feeling of heaviness in the scrotum, or visible swollen veins.
In your case, since you have already been diagnosed with a varicocele by a physician, it is important to follow their advice and monitor your symptoms. The fact that your doctor mentioned it is not severe is a positive sign, but it’s understandable to be concerned about any changes you notice, such as the prominence of the veins or any discomfort.
Self-Care and Management
1. Supportive Underwear: Wearing supportive underwear can help alleviate discomfort. This type of underwear provides support to the scrotum and can reduce the feeling of heaviness.
2. Avoiding Strain: If you engage in activities that involve heavy lifting or straining, try to minimize these as they can exacerbate symptoms.
3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the area may help reduce swelling and discomfort temporarily.
4. Regular Monitoring: Keep an eye on any changes in size, shape, or discomfort levels. If you notice significant changes, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider.
5. Healthy Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, can improve overall vascular health and may help manage symptoms.
When to Seek Help
While your doctor has indicated that the condition is not severe, there are certain circumstances under which you should seek further medical advice:
- Increased Pain or Discomfort: If you experience a significant increase in pain or discomfort, it is important to consult your doctor.
- Changes in Size or Appearance: If the varicocele appears to be getting larger or if you notice any unusual changes in the scrotum, you should seek medical advice.
- Fertility Concerns: If you are planning to conceive and have concerns about fertility, it may be worth discussing with your doctor, as varicoceles can sometimes affect sperm production.
- Symptoms of Complications: If you experience symptoms such as swelling, redness, or fever, these could indicate a more serious issue, such as an infection or thrombosis, and you should seek immediate medical attention.
Conclusion
In summary, while varicocele can be concerning, many individuals manage the condition effectively with self-care and regular monitoring. Since your doctor has already evaluated your condition and deemed it not severe, it is likely that you can manage it with the suggestions provided. However, always trust your instincts—if you feel that something is not right or if your symptoms change, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further evaluation. Regular check-ups and open communication with your doctor are key to managing your health effectively.
