Hard lump on the buttocks?
Hello Doctor: I recently noticed a raised lump near the right side of my buttock, close to the anus.
It's not very prominent, but it seems to be larger under the skin.
At first, I thought it was movable, but it has since become fixed.
When I press on it, it feels like a small round ball on a blood vessel; it is somewhat firm yet elastic.
It is not painful and has been present for over three weeks.
Is this serious? Thank you.

Hello, sister: Based on your written description, it is currently difficult to determine your specific condition.
The main characteristic of skin diseases is that "seeing is believing, and tactile examination is essential." It is indeed challenging to convey a complete picture solely through written descriptions.
Therefore, I recommend that when you notice the symptoms described, you should promptly visit a public hospital under the Department of Health in your city or county and consult with a dermatologist.
All the physicians in our department are very willing to assist you.
Thank you for using "Taiwan e-Hospital" to ask your questions.

When it comes to hard bumps on the buttocks, particularly in the area near the anus, there are several potential causes that should be considered. Based on your description, it sounds like you have a subcutaneous mass that is firm, elastic, and non-painful. While it is reassuring that the bump is not causing you pain and has been present for over three weeks without significant changes, it is still important to understand the possible underlying conditions.
1. Lipoma: One of the most common benign tumors that can occur in the subcutaneous tissue is a lipoma. These are soft, fatty lumps that can feel firm and are usually painless. They are generally harmless and do not require treatment unless they become bothersome or for cosmetic reasons.
2. Sebaceous Cyst: Another possibility is a sebaceous cyst, which can occur when a hair follicle becomes blocked. These cysts can feel firm and may fluctuate in size. They are typically painless unless they become infected.
3. Abscess: If the bump were to become painful, red, or warm, it could indicate an abscess, which is a collection of pus due to infection. Abscesses often require drainage and antibiotic treatment.
4. Hernia: In some cases, a hernia can present as a lump in the buttock area, particularly if there is a weakness in the abdominal wall. Hernias may require surgical intervention, especially if they become incarcerated or strangulated.
5. Lymphadenopathy: Enlarged lymph nodes can also present as bumps in the area, particularly if there is an infection or inflammatory process occurring in the body.
6. Other Conditions: There are other less common conditions that could cause a bump, such as dermatofibromas or even more serious conditions like tumors. However, these are less likely given your description.
Given that the bump has been present for over three weeks and is not causing any discomfort, it may not be an immediate cause for concern. However, it is essential to monitor it for any changes in size, shape, or symptoms. If it begins to cause pain, changes color, or you notice other symptoms such as fever or systemic illness, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In terms of next steps, it would be prudent to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider for a physical examination. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to better characterize the bump and determine if any further action is necessary. In most cases, a thorough evaluation will provide peace of mind and ensure that any potential issues are addressed early.
In summary, while the bump you describe may not be serious, it is always best to err on the side of caution and consult with a healthcare professional for a definitive diagnosis and appropriate management.
