Ear pain?
Hello doctor, I have been experiencing sudden pain in my left ear over the past few days, especially when swallowing saliva, which causes a sharp pain.
I also feel a warmth in my ear.
I saw a doctor who said it was caused by earwax removal, but there has been no improvement since the visit; the pain persists, and I feel like there might be something inside...
or maybe not...
it's really uncomfortable.
I don't know what the cause is.
Why is there a sharp pain accompanied by warmth in my ear? Should I go see a doctor again?

Ear pain can be a distressing experience, and understanding its causes is crucial for determining when to seek medical help. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing significant discomfort in your left ear, particularly when swallowing, accompanied by a sensation of heat. This could be indicative of several underlying issues.
One common cause of ear pain is earwax impaction. If you have been using cotton swabs or other objects to clean your ears, it’s possible that you may have pushed wax deeper into the ear canal, leading to blockage and pain. This can create a feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear, and sometimes even a sensation of heat due to inflammation. If the earwax is impacted, it can also lead to temporary hearing loss and discomfort.
Another possibility is acute otitis externa, commonly known as swimmer's ear, which is an infection of the outer ear canal. This condition can occur if water remains trapped in the ear, creating a moist environment that fosters bacterial growth. Symptoms typically include pain, itching, and sometimes discharge from the ear. The pain can be exacerbated by swallowing or pulling on the earlobe.
You mentioned that your doctor suggested the pain might be due to ear cleaning. If you have indeed been cleaning your ears frequently, it could lead to irritation or trauma to the ear canal, resulting in inflammation and pain. The sensation of heat you are feeling could be a sign of inflammation in the area.
In some cases, eustachian tube dysfunction can also cause ear pain. The eustachian tube helps equalize pressure in the middle ear, and if it becomes blocked or fails to open properly, it can lead to a feeling of fullness, pain, and even a popping sensation when swallowing or yawning. This dysfunction can be caused by allergies, colds, or sinus infections.
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention again, especially since the pain persists despite initial treatment. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough examination of your ear using an otoscope to check for signs of infection, wax buildup, or any other abnormalities. They may also recommend treatments such as ear drops, antibiotics if an infection is present, or even manual removal of earwax if necessary.
In summary, ear pain can arise from various causes, including earwax impaction, infections, or irritation from cleaning. The sensation of heat and pain during swallowing suggests that there may be inflammation or blockage in the ear canal. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, it is essential to follow up with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist for further evaluation and appropriate treatment. Your comfort and health are paramount, especially if you are experiencing significant discomfort.
