My penis?

Hello doctor, I am 18 years old.
I have always felt that my penis is quite small when not erect, around 3 to 4 centimeters, which seems very childlike.
However, when erect, it measures 13.5 centimeters.
I feel like it hasn't grown at all.
I am 180 cm tall and weigh 76 kg, which is considered a normal weight.
I'm not sure if I haven't fully developed or what the issue might be.
Last month, I visited a urologist in Taipei, and the doctor said there were no problems.
So why does my penis appear to be the same size when flaccid as it did during middle school and puberty? I heard that the penis only develops until the age of 18.
Am I developing slowly, or is there something else going on? I experienced anorexia during the transition from 8th to 9th grade, losing weight from 90 kg to 70 kg, and I didn't eat much during that time.
I'm not sure if that caused any nutritional deficiencies, but I am eating normally now.
Regarding my foreskin, the urologist said that whether to circumcise or not is a personal choice, as it covers the glans when flaccid but can be retracted freely.
I am genuinely concerned whether my length is normal or if I am still developing, but I am already 18, and I feel very insecure about it.

Dr. Lai Ronghao reply Urology

Hello: Please do not feel overly self-conscious.
Rather than having a long and soft condition, it is better to have a smaller but firm one.
I suggest you consider consulting other urologists for their opinions.
If they find no issues, try not to worry too much.
Thank you!

Understanding penis development and the concerns surrounding it is a common issue for many young adults. At 18 years old, you are at a stage where most physical development, including genital growth, is nearing completion. However, it is important to understand that individual development can vary significantly from person to person.

Firstly, the average size of an erect penis is typically around 5 to 6 inches (approximately 12.7 to 15.24 cm), but there is a wide range of normal sizes. The fact that your penis measures 13.5 cm when erect is within the normal range. The size of the penis when flaccid can vary greatly and does not necessarily correlate with size when erect. It is also common for individuals to feel self-conscious about their size, especially during the teenage years and early adulthood, when comparisons to peers can lead to feelings of inadequacy.

Regarding your concerns about whether your penis is still developing, it is important to note that while most males experience significant growth during puberty, which typically occurs between the ages of 9 and 14, some may continue to see minor changes into their late teens. The process of penis development is influenced by various factors, including genetics, hormonal levels, and overall health. Since you mentioned having experienced an eating disorder during your earlier teenage years, it is possible that this could have impacted your growth and development at that time. Nutritional deficiencies during critical growth periods can affect physical development, including genital growth.

You also mentioned that a urologist evaluated you and found no issues, which is reassuring. If the doctor has assessed your development and found it to be normal, it is likely that you are within the range of typical development for your age. The fact that your penis can retract the foreskin freely is also a positive sign, indicating that there are no immediate concerns regarding phimosis (a condition where the foreskin cannot be easily retracted).

It is also worth noting that self-esteem issues related to body image are common among young adults. If you find that your feelings of self-consciousness are affecting your mental health or quality of life, it may be beneficial to speak with a mental health professional. They can provide support and strategies to help you build confidence and address any underlying concerns related to body image.

In conclusion, while it is natural to have concerns about physical development, it is essential to recognize that variations in size and growth patterns are normal. Since you have already consulted with a medical professional who has reassured you about your development, it may be helpful to focus on your overall health and well-being rather than solely on physical attributes. Engaging in healthy lifestyle choices, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, and positive social interactions, can contribute to improved self-esteem and body image. Remember, confidence comes from within, and embracing your individuality is key to feeling good about yourself.
