Will transitioning to Traditional Chinese Medicine lead to improvement?

Doctor: Sorry to interrupt, but due to my nasal allergies, I often experience post-nasal drip that leads to bacterial infections in my throat.
My sore throat hasn't improved, and it's causing severe dizziness and nausea.
I've seen Western doctors, but there's been no improvement.
Would switching to Traditional Chinese Medicine help? Thank you for your response.

AMY, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/05/19

Dr. Xu Li'an reply Family Medicine

Dear Amy, I also suffer from allergic rhinitis.
Every morning, I have a runny nose that feels like a faucet.
Western medicine can only treat the symptoms, not the root cause.
When the symptoms are severe, I take medication; when they are mild, I try to adapt to them.
I consider the runny nose as a way to eliminate toxins.
Traditional Chinese medicine should be able to improve my constitution, but it may require patience.
I recommend seeing a licensed TCM practitioner and not an unlicensed one.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and good health.
Best regards, Hsu Li-An, 9505251604, Family Medicine, Hualien Hospital.

More Info

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is an allergic reaction that occurs when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the air, such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. Symptoms often include sneezing, nasal congestion, runny nose, itchy eyes, and throat irritation. In some cases, post-nasal drip can occur, where mucus drains down the back of the throat, leading to throat irritation, pain, and even infections. This can also cause additional symptoms such as dizziness and nausea, as you described.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers various approaches to treating allergic rhinitis and associated throat issues. TCM is based on the concept of balancing the body's energy, or "Qi," and addressing the root causes of health issues rather than just the symptoms. Here are some TCM methods that may be beneficial for your condition:
1. Herbal Medicine: TCM practitioners often prescribe herbal formulas tailored to the individual's symptoms and constitution. Common herbs used for allergic rhinitis include:
- Xanthium (Cang Er Zi): Known for its ability to relieve nasal congestion and sinus pressure.

- Magnolia Flower (Xin Yi Hua): Often used to alleviate nasal symptoms and improve airflow.

- Licorice Root (Gan Cao): Used to harmonize other herbs in the formula and soothe the throat.

2. Acupuncture: This involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and restore balance. Acupuncture can help reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and improve overall immune function. Studies have shown that acupuncture may be effective in reducing the symptoms of allergic rhinitis.

3. Dietary Therapy: TCM emphasizes the importance of diet in maintaining health. Foods that are anti-inflammatory and support the immune system, such as ginger, garlic, and green leafy vegetables, may be recommended. Avoiding cold and damp foods, which are thought to exacerbate symptoms, is also advised.

4. Lifestyle Modifications: TCM practitioners may suggest lifestyle changes to help manage symptoms. This can include stress reduction techniques, such as Tai Chi or Qi Gong, which promote relaxation and improve overall well-being.

5. Nasal Irrigation: While not strictly a TCM practice, nasal irrigation with saline solutions can help clear allergens and mucus from the nasal passages, providing relief from symptoms.

It is essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can assess your specific condition and create a personalized treatment plan. They will consider your overall health, lifestyle, and any other underlying issues that may be contributing to your symptoms.

While many individuals find relief through TCM, it is important to note that results can vary. If you have not seen improvement with Western medicine, TCM may offer a complementary approach. However, it is advisable to keep your healthcare provider informed about any alternative treatments you pursue, especially if you are currently taking medications or have underlying health conditions.

In conclusion, Traditional Chinese Medicine can potentially help with allergic rhinitis and throat issues through a combination of herbal remedies, acupuncture, dietary changes, and lifestyle modifications. It is crucial to work with a qualified practitioner to ensure a safe and effective treatment plan tailored to your needs.
