Post-nasal drip
Hello: Due to nasal allergies, I often experience post-nasal drip that gets stuck in my throat, making it difficult to swallow or cough it out.
Each time, I have to go to the hospital for suction, which is really uncomfortable.
Could you please suggest some methods to resolve this issue? Thank you for your response!

Dr. Wu Xuanzhang reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Hello AMY: The treatment for nasal allergies should adopt a "root cause" approach.
The "clearing the source" method, in addition to the suction techniques used in otolaryngology, also involves reducing secretions as another strategy.
Traditional Chinese medicine, such as Ge Gen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) and acupuncture, can help decrease nasal secretions.
Exercise is another effective way to help expel mucus.
The "root cause" approach is a method that traditional Chinese medicine excels at, focusing on adjusting the body's constitution and enhancing immunity.
Many patients with chronic sinusitis find relief from nasal allergies through this root cause approach.
You are welcome to come in for a consultation, and I will provide you with a detailed diagnosis and explanation.

Post-nasal drip is a common condition that occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the back of the throat, often as a result of allergies, colds, or sinus infections. This can lead to discomfort, coughing, and difficulty swallowing, as you have described. Here are some effective remedies and strategies to manage post-nasal drip caused by allergies:
1. Antihistamines: Over-the-counter antihistamines, such as loratadine (Claritin) or cetirizine (Zyrtec), can help reduce the production of mucus by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. These medications can alleviate nasal congestion and reduce post-nasal drip.
2. Nasal Corticosteroids: Nasal sprays like Flixonase (fluticasone propionate) are effective in reducing inflammation in the nasal passages, which can help decrease mucus production. Regular use of these sprays can provide significant relief from allergy symptoms and post-nasal drip.
3. Saline Nasal Irrigation: Using a saline solution to rinse your nasal passages can help clear out mucus and allergens. Devices like neti pots or saline nasal sprays can be used for this purpose. This method not only helps to reduce post-nasal drip but also promotes overall nasal health.
4. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help thin the mucus, making it easier to expel. Warm liquids, such as herbal teas or broths, can be particularly soothing and effective.
5. Humidifiers: Using a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air, which can help soothe irritated nasal passages and throat. This is especially helpful in dry environments or during winter months when indoor heating can dry out the air.
6. Avoid Irritants: Identifying and avoiding allergens or irritants that trigger your symptoms is crucial. Common triggers include pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and smoke. Keeping your living environment clean and using air purifiers can help reduce exposure to these irritants.
7. Elevate Your Head While Sleeping: Sleeping with your head elevated can help prevent mucus from pooling in the back of your throat, reducing the discomfort associated with post-nasal drip.
8. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your symptoms persist despite trying these remedies, it may be beneficial to consult an allergist or an ENT specialist. They can perform tests to identify specific allergens and recommend targeted treatments, which may include allergy shots (immunotherapy) or prescription medications.
In summary, managing post-nasal drip involves a combination of lifestyle changes, over-the-counter medications, and possibly prescription treatments. It's important to find the right combination that works for you, and consulting with a healthcare professional can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific situation.
