Postoperative Questions Regarding Varicocele Surgery

I had varicocele surgery at Linkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital two days ago, with an incision of about 2-3 centimeters on the upper left side.
I currently feel numbness on the left side of the incision; is this normal? There are large areas of redness on my thigh and abdomen, but not around the incision itself.
Is this normal? The doctor advised me not to get the incision wet for three days, but did not mention whether I need to change the adhesive tape and gauze.
Should I wait until my follow-up appointment to have them removed? I'm concerned that sweating might cause the wound to become moist, which could increase the risk of infection.
If it’s been a little over a month after surgery, I plan to take a physical fitness test, which includes running 1600 meters, doing 30 sit-ups, and two pull-ups.
Will the incision and surrounding area still hurt or feel numb by then? How long after surgery is it safe to engage in light physical activities? I would greatly appreciate your help in answering these questions.
Thank you very much!

Xiao Ming, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/06/09

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Xiao Ming: Hello, after the surgery, the skin around the wound feels numb.
This is due to local nerve injury, which usually recovers over time; however, a small percentage may have poorer recovery.
Regardless, it will not affect daily life or the surgical outcome.
There are large areas of redness on your thigh and abdomen? I cannot make a judgment; it could be an allergic reaction to the antiseptic used during the surgery or an allergy to the electrode pads.
For a detailed assessment, please consult your surgeon.
The wound dressing should generally be changed once a day, and if it is very clean, changing it every 2-3 days is also acceptable.
After surgery, theoretically, within about 4-6 weeks, muscle strength should recover to over 80%, and there should be no restrictions on physical activity.
If you are concerned, you can ask your doctor for a medical certificate for the testing officer's reference.
Once the anesthesia wears off, you can engage in light activities; I personally recommend getting out of bed and moving around as soon as possible.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

After undergoing varicocele surgery, it's essential to understand the recovery process and when it's safe to resume physical activities. Your concerns about the sensations around your incision site, the redness on your skin, and the timeline for returning to exercise are valid and important to address.

Firstly, experiencing numbness or a tingling sensation around the incision site is not uncommon after surgery. This can occur due to nerve irritation or damage during the procedure. However, if the numbness persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult your surgeon for further evaluation. The redness on your thigh and abdomen could be a normal response to the surgical trauma, but if it spreads or is accompanied by increased pain, swelling, or discharge, these could be signs of infection, and you should seek medical attention promptly.

Regarding the care of your surgical site, your surgeon's advice to keep the area dry for the first three days is standard. As for the adhesive strips and gauze, they typically do not need to be changed unless they become wet or soiled. If you are concerned about moisture from sweating, you can gently dab the area with a clean, dry cloth to absorb any sweat without disturbing the dressing. It's crucial to follow your surgeon's specific instructions about when to remove the dressings, as they may have particular protocols based on your individual case.

In terms of returning to exercise, it's generally recommended to avoid strenuous activities for at least two weeks post-surgery. Light activities, such as walking, can usually be resumed shortly after surgery, but you should listen to your body and avoid any movements that cause pain or discomfort. The timeline for resuming more intense exercises, such as running or doing sit-ups, can vary based on individual recovery rates. Many surgeons suggest waiting at least four to six weeks before engaging in high-impact activities, but this can depend on how well you are healing.

If you plan to participate in physical tests like running or sit-ups shortly after surgery, be cautious. Engaging in such activities too soon can lead to complications, including pain at the incision site or even hernia formation. It's best to consult your surgeon before attempting these exercises to ensure that your body is ready for the demands of such activities.

In summary, while some sensations and redness can be normal post-surgery, monitoring your symptoms is crucial. Follow your surgeon's guidelines for wound care and exercise, and don't hesitate to reach out to them with any concerns. Recovery is a gradual process, and prioritizing your healing will help ensure a successful return to your regular activities.
