Heavy menstrual flow?

Hello! My mother is 50 years old, and her menstrual cycle has been irregular.
Recently, she experienced a sudden increase in menstrual flow.
Aside from this, she has no other discomfort, just feels that the flow is excessive.
During a previous health check, it seems there was a value related to her uterus that was elevated, but no further examination was conducted.
I would like to know if this could be uterine fibroids and whether it poses any risks.

Hello: 1.
Please have your mother bring the report with the so-called elevated values for consultation.
2.
If there are uterine fibroids, an ultrasound will provide the information.

Heavy menstrual flow, especially at the age of 50, can indeed be concerning and may be indicative of several underlying conditions, one of which is uterine fibroids. Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are non-cancerous growths of the uterus that can lead to heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and other symptoms. They are quite common, particularly in women of reproductive age, and their prevalence can increase as women approach menopause.

At 50 years old, your mother is likely in perimenopause, the transitional phase leading up to menopause, which can cause hormonal fluctuations that may result in changes to menstrual patterns. Heavy menstrual bleeding, or menorrhagia, can be caused by fibroids, but it can also be due to other factors such as hormonal imbalances, endometrial polyps, adenomyosis, or even more serious conditions like endometrial hyperplasia or cancer.

Given that your mother has had a previous health check where a uterine measurement was noted to be high, it would be prudent to consider that fibroids could be a contributing factor to her increased menstrual flow. Fibroids can vary in size and location, and while many women with fibroids experience no symptoms, those that do may have significant menstrual issues.

In terms of danger, while fibroids themselves are generally benign, they can lead to complications such as anemia due to heavy bleeding. If the bleeding is excessive, it can result in fatigue and other health issues. Additionally, if there are any changes in the menstrual cycle that are sudden or accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, it is essential to seek medical attention.

To address the situation, it is advisable for your mother to consult with a healthcare provider, preferably a gynecologist. They may recommend a pelvic ultrasound or other imaging studies to assess the size and number of fibroids, as well as to rule out other potential causes of heavy bleeding. Treatment options vary depending on the severity of symptoms and can range from medication to manage bleeding and pain to surgical options if the fibroids are significantly affecting quality of life.

In summary, while uterine fibroids are a possible cause of heavy menstrual flow at age 50, it is essential to conduct further evaluations to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Regular check-ups and open communication with healthcare providers are crucial in managing any changes in menstrual health, especially during the transition to menopause.
