Why do I often get sick?

Hello Dr.
Hsu,
I have been frequently experiencing colds and gastroenteritis for several weeks now, alternating between the two.
I get a cold, recover, and then a few days later, I have gastroenteritis.
After recovering from that, I get sick again shortly after.
Sometimes, I also experience symptoms of a urinary tract infection, but mostly it’s upper respiratory infections.
I usually take some vitamins to supplement my nutrition and get some sunlight, but my immune system seems very weak, and I often get sick and take medication, which worries me a lot.

Additionally, a couple of days ago, I accidentally injured myself while exercising.
The wound is not deep, but it is large.
I applied some eye ointment and consulted a professional nurse (school nurse) on how to care for the wound, but it is still developing pus.
During this time, I also caught a cold again! I am unsure how to maintain my health.
Thank you, Dr.
Hsu.

Dear Worried Girl Linda,
I believe that frequently falling ill helps to build resilience for the future.
I have also been sick often since childhood, and even now, many medical issues remain unexplained.
Answering why you often get sick is akin to addressing questions like why Chen Shui-bian could become president while I am just an ordinary citizen, or why Wang Yongqing could amass wealth while I struggle financially.
Part of the answers to these questions is simply unknown, while another part is something you already understand deep down.
When a wound becomes infected, it requires surgical intervention and possibly antibiotics.
Taking medication for a cold alleviates symptoms, but you can recover without it.
Gastroenteritis is the body's way of expelling toxins.
As for maintaining health, I believe mental fortitude is more important.
If you frequently fall ill, you must learn to live with your condition and practice resilience, allowing your mind to remain unaffected by your body.
Remember, the body will inevitably experience malfunctions and deterioration over time; this is my personal perspective.
Wishing you a speedy recovery in both body and mind.

Frequent illnesses, such as recurrent colds, gastroenteritis, and urinary tract infections, can be concerning and frustrating. Your situation suggests that there may be underlying factors contributing to your compromised immune system and susceptibility to infections. Let's explore some potential reasons for your frequent illnesses and discuss strategies for improving your health.

1. Immune System Function: The immune system plays a crucial role in defending the body against pathogens. If your immune system is weakened, you may be more prone to infections. Factors that can weaken the immune system include chronic stress, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and underlying medical conditions. It’s essential to evaluate your lifestyle and identify areas that may need improvement.

2. Chronic Stress: Stress can have a significant impact on your immune system. When you are under stress, your body produces stress hormones like cortisol, which can suppress immune function. If you are experiencing ongoing stress, it may be beneficial to explore stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga.

3. Nutrition: While you mentioned taking vitamins and getting sunlight, it’s important to ensure that your overall diet is balanced and rich in essential nutrients. A diet lacking in key vitamins and minerals can impair immune function. Focus on consuming a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Foods rich in vitamin C (like citrus fruits), zinc (found in nuts and seeds), and probiotics (like yogurt) can support immune health.

4. Sleep: Quality sleep is vital for a healthy immune system. Lack of sleep can lead to increased susceptibility to infections. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night, and establish a regular sleep schedule to help regulate your body’s internal clock.

5. Hydration: Staying hydrated is essential for overall health and can help your body fight off infections. Make sure you are drinking enough water throughout the day, especially if you are experiencing gastrointestinal issues.

6. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can boost your immune system and improve your overall health. However, be cautious not to overexert yourself, especially if you are recovering from injuries or illnesses. Aim for moderate exercise, such as walking or cycling, for at least 150 minutes per week.

7. Injury Care: Regarding your recent injury, it’s important to properly care for wounds to prevent infection. If the wound is not healing or is showing signs of infection (such as increased redness, swelling, or pus), it’s crucial to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can provide appropriate treatment and may prescribe antibiotics if necessary.

8. Underlying Health Conditions: If you continue to experience frequent illnesses despite making lifestyle changes, it may be worth consulting with a healthcare provider. They can evaluate for any underlying health conditions that may be affecting your immune system, such as allergies, autoimmune disorders, or chronic illnesses.

9. Regular Check-ups: Regular health check-ups can help monitor your overall health and catch any potential issues early. Discuss your concerns about frequent illnesses with your healthcare provider, who may recommend specific tests or evaluations.

In summary, frequent illnesses can be a sign of an underlying issue, and addressing lifestyle factors such as nutrition, stress management, sleep, and hydration can significantly improve your immune function. If your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice for further evaluation and tailored treatment. Taking proactive steps to care for your health can lead to improved well-being and a stronger immune system.
