I think I might have depression?
Doctor, I'm sorry, but I think I might be suffering from depression.
No matter what I do, I can only think of the negative aspects.
Whenever I'm unhappy, I tend to hurt myself.
I've even attempted suicide before, and I get angry very easily.
My girlfriend says I tend to overthink things, and I agree with her.
What should I do?

Hello, X: Based on your letter, it is uncertain whether you may be suffering from depression.
However, the diagnosis of mental disorders requires an in-person evaluation.
Therefore, I recommend that you visit the psychiatric outpatient department at any medical institution.
Our outpatient hours are from Monday to Saturday in the morning and from Monday to Thursday in the afternoon.
Registration times are from 8:10 AM to 11:00 AM and from 12:00 PM to 3:30 PM.
Thank you.

It sounds like you are going through a very difficult time, and I want to emphasize that you are not alone in this struggle. Many people experience feelings of depression, and it is important to recognize the symptoms and seek help. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing several key symptoms of depression, including persistent negative thoughts, self-harm, anger, and difficulty managing emotions.
Firstly, it’s crucial to understand that depression is a complex mental health condition that can manifest in various ways. Common symptoms include:
1. Persistent Sadness or Low Mood: Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless most of the day, nearly every day.
2. Loss of Interest or Pleasure: A marked decrease in interest or pleasure in activities that were once enjoyable.
3. Changes in Appetite or Weight: Significant weight loss or gain, or changes in appetite.
4. Sleep Disturbances: Insomnia or sleeping too much.
5. Fatigue or Loss of Energy: Feeling tired or having little energy, even after adequate rest.
6. Feelings of Worthlessness or Guilt: Excessive or inappropriate guilt or feelings of worthlessness.
7. Difficulty Concentrating: Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
8. Thoughts of Death or Suicide: Recurrent thoughts of death, suicidal ideation, or attempts.
Given that you mentioned having thoughts of self-harm and previous suicidal attempts, it is imperative that you seek professional help immediately. These thoughts can be very serious and require immediate attention from a mental health professional.
Here are some steps you can take:
1. Reach Out for Help: Contact a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. They can provide a proper assessment and discuss treatment options, which may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both.
2. Talk to Someone You Trust: Sharing your feelings with a trusted friend or family member can provide some relief. They may be able to offer support and help you feel less isolated.
3. Crisis Resources: If you are in immediate danger or feel like you might harm yourself, please contact emergency services or a crisis hotline in your area. They can provide immediate support and guidance.
4. Self-Care Strategies: While professional help is crucial, there are also self-care strategies you can try. These include:
- Physical Activity: Exercise can help improve mood and reduce anxiety.
- Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as meditation, deep breathing, or yoga can help manage stress and improve emotional regulation.
- Healthy Routine: Establishing a daily routine that includes regular meals, sleep, and activities can provide structure and stability.
5. Avoid Substance Use: Alcohol and drugs can exacerbate feelings of depression and anger, so it’s best to avoid them.
6. Journaling: Writing down your thoughts and feelings can be a helpful way to process emotions and identify triggers for your negative thoughts.
Remember, seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It’s important to address these feelings and thoughts with a professional who can guide you through this challenging time. You deserve support and the opportunity to feel better. Please take care of yourself and reach out for the help you need.
