What are the effects of excessive masturbation?

Hello, Dr.
Chen.
I would like to ask about excessive masturbation.
Could it lead to infertility? Will it cause problems when trying to have children? Am I using up all my sperm? Recently, I have noticed that my ejaculation seems to have less sperm and is not as thick.
I have been masturbating since middle school, and perhaps I was overdoing it back then, as I experienced persistent abdominal pain but was too shy to see a doctor.
Eventually, it got better, but my sexual performance is not as good as it used to be.
The area around the glans and the urethra appears to have a condition similar to a rash.
It seems like I might have urethritis as well, as sometimes my urine stream splits, and I experience dribbling.
Please provide me with your advice.
Thank you.

Dr. Chen Xiuyi reply Urology

Hello: Masturbation generally does not affect future fertility and does not cause urethritis.
However, excessive frequency may impact physical strength and mental state, so moderation is necessary.
To diagnose urethritis, a urine test is required, and it is best to seek medical attention.
Sincerely, Dr.
Chen Hsiu-Yi, Urologist.

Excessive masturbation is a topic that often raises concerns regarding its potential effects on fertility and urological health. It's important to address these concerns with a clear understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects involved.

Firstly, regarding fertility, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that masturbation, even when done excessively, leads to infertility. The human body is capable of producing sperm continuously, and while frequent ejaculation may temporarily reduce the volume of semen or the concentration of sperm, it does not deplete the body’s ability to produce sperm over time. The body has a remarkable capacity to regenerate sperm, and any perceived decrease in sperm count or quality due to frequent masturbation is usually temporary. If you are concerned about your sperm quality, it may be beneficial to abstain from ejaculation for a few days before a semen analysis, as this can help provide a more accurate assessment of your sperm health.

However, excessive masturbation can lead to other issues. For instance, if it is done in a manner that causes physical discomfort or pain, such as the abdominal pain you mentioned, it may indicate that the practice is being taken to an unhealthy extreme. Chronic pain or discomfort in the genital area or abdomen should be evaluated by a healthcare professional, as it may be indicative of underlying conditions such as pelvic floor dysfunction or other urological issues.

In terms of urological health, the symptoms you described, such as changes in urination patterns (like splitting of the urine stream or dribbling), could suggest a potential issue with the urethra or prostate. These symptoms are not typically associated with masturbation itself but may be related to other factors, such as infections or inflammation. Conditions like urethritis or prostatitis can lead to similar symptoms and should be assessed by a urologist.

The psychological aspect of excessive masturbation is also worth noting. If the behavior is compulsive and interferes with daily life, relationships, or responsibilities, it may be beneficial to seek counseling or therapy. A mental health professional can help address any underlying issues, such as anxiety or depression, that may be contributing to the behavior.

In summary, while excessive masturbation is unlikely to cause infertility, it can lead to physical discomfort and potential urological issues. If you are experiencing pain, changes in urination, or concerns about your sexual health, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a thorough evaluation and recommend appropriate treatment or lifestyle changes. Maintaining open communication about sexual health is crucial, and seeking help is a positive step towards ensuring both physical and mental well-being.
