Can I Use Concealer on My Birthmark After Laser Treatment? - Dermatology

Skin

I have a birthmark on the right side of my face that is approximately 1 cm in diameter.
It was white when I was younger but has gradually turned dark brown, although its size has remained the same.
I usually apply a concealer over the birthmark and then cover it with skin-colored tape for convenience when going out.
However, a few days ago, I visited a doctor who recommended laser treatment, which would require about 3 to 4 sessions, with a 1.5-month interval between each session.
I would like to know if I can continue using concealer on the birthmark during the 1.5-month interval after my first laser treatment.
I have heard that the area may become darker initially before it starts to improve.
If I need to cover the birthmark when going out, is it acceptable to use skin-colored tape or cosmetics over it?

Hello: After laser treatment, there will indeed be a transitional period of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
You can use concealers or cosmetics to cover it up.

After undergoing laser treatment for a birthmark, it is common to have concerns about how to manage the appearance of the treated area, especially if you want to conceal it for cosmetic reasons. Based on the information provided, it is indeed possible to use concealer or other cosmetic products on your birthmark after laser treatment, but there are some important considerations to keep in mind.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that laser treatments can cause a temporary darkening of the skin, known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. This is a normal response and can occur as the skin heals. During this time, you may feel tempted to cover the area with makeup or concealer to hide the discoloration. However, it is crucial to ensure that the skin is adequately healed before applying any products.

Typically, after laser treatment, the skin may be sensitive and prone to irritation. Therefore, it is advisable to wait until the skin has fully healed before applying any makeup. This healing process can vary from person to person, but it generally takes about one to two weeks. During this time, you should focus on keeping the area clean and moisturized, using gentle products that do not irritate the skin.

Once the skin has healed, you can start using concealer or other cosmetic products. When choosing a concealer, opt for non-comedogenic and hypoallergenic formulas to minimize the risk of irritation or allergic reactions. It is also a good idea to perform a patch test on a small area of skin before applying it to the treated birthmark.

In addition to concealer, you may consider using a breathable adhesive bandage or skin tape designed for sensitive skin. This can help protect the area while providing a more natural appearance. However, make sure that the adhesive does not cause any additional irritation or allergic reactions.

Regarding the use of spot treatments like cover-up creams or concealers, it is perfectly acceptable to use them after the initial healing phase. Just be cautious about the ingredients in these products, as some may be too harsh for recently treated skin. Always consult with your dermatologist or the healthcare provider who performed the laser treatment for personalized advice on when and how to use makeup on the treated area.

Lastly, it is essential to follow up with your healthcare provider after each laser session. They can provide guidance on the healing process and when it is safe to resume your regular skincare and makeup routine. If you notice any unusual changes, such as increased redness, swelling, or discomfort, be sure to reach out to them for further evaluation.

In summary, while you can use concealer on your birthmark after laser treatment, it is vital to wait until the skin has fully healed and to choose products that are gentle and suitable for sensitive skin. Always prioritize the health of your skin and consult with your healthcare provider for the best course of action.
