About scar removal gel?
Hello Dr.
Lu: I currently have a question regarding a product called Kanga Scar Gel, developed by Max Pharmaceuticals in Germany.
I have read a lot of information, and some people believe it is ineffective, while others think it is beneficial.
Additionally, there are physicians selling this product.
If it is indeed ineffective, does that mean Max Pharmaceuticals is misleading consumers? Isn't it a reputable pharmaceutical company? The product is not inexpensive either.
Please help me clarify this doubt.
Thank you.

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
Scar gels generally only help to fade scars and cannot completely eliminate them.
If your goal is merely to lighten the scars, then isn't that considered effective?

When it comes to scar removal gels, including products like Kanga Scar Gel developed by a reputable pharmaceutical company, the effectiveness can vary widely among individuals. Scar treatment products often contain ingredients that are intended to improve the appearance of scars, such as silicone, which has been shown in some studies to help flatten and soften scars. However, the results can be inconsistent, and not every product works for every person.
Kanga Scar Gel, like many other topical treatments, is designed to be applied directly to the scarred area. The active ingredients in such gels may include silicone, which is known for its ability to hydrate the scar tissue and create a protective barrier that can help in the healing process. Silicone gels have been widely studied and are often recommended by dermatologists for the management of hypertrophic scars and keloids. They work by providing a moist environment that can help to reduce scar formation and improve the overall appearance of the skin.
However, it is essential to understand that while some users report positive results, others may not see any significant improvement. This variability can be attributed to several factors, including the age of the scar, its type (e.g., surgical, traumatic, acne), the individual's skin type, and adherence to the application regimen. For instance, newer scars may respond better to treatment than older scars, which can be more challenging to treat.
Regarding the question of whether the manufacturer is misleading consumers, it is crucial to approach this with a balanced perspective. Large pharmaceutical companies typically conduct research and clinical trials to support their products, but marketing claims can sometimes exaggerate the efficacy of a product. It is not uncommon for products to receive mixed reviews from users, as personal experiences can differ significantly based on individual circumstances.
If you are considering using Kanga Scar Gel or any other scar treatment, it is advisable to consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific scar type and skin condition. Additionally, they may suggest complementary treatments, such as laser therapy, microdermabrasion, or chemical peels, which can enhance the results of topical treatments.
In summary, while Kanga Scar Gel may work for some individuals, its effectiveness is not guaranteed for everyone. The mixed reviews reflect the variability in individual responses to scar treatments. Consulting with a healthcare professional can help you make an informed decision and explore the best options for your scar management.
