Seborrheic dermatitis

Hello.
I am a high school student.
Since middle school, due to academic pressure and relationship issues, I experienced a period of severe acne breakouts.
I also developed scalp acne, my face became oily, and I suffered from skin allergies, along with widespread hives.
Additionally, I had episodes of depression related to relationship problems.
Although these issues improved for a while, they have now recurred.
I am currently under significant academic stress, and my physical condition seems to be deteriorating.
I feel constantly gloomy, and my previous hives have turned into chronic urticaria.
I am unsure why I have developed seborrheic dermatitis, which causes oily scalp, severe acne, itchy scalp, thinning hair, and hair loss.
I am really worried.
I have tried Western medicine, but it has not resolved the issues.
I wonder if it is related to my constitution.
I tend to have cold hands and feet, am sensitive to cold and heat, experience body swelling, have poor metabolism, dark circles under my eyes, heart issues, and am easily startled and anxious.
I often experience palpitations, have a pale and dull complexion, dry and pale lips, and frequent chest tightness.
Recently, I have been experiencing constipation and feel that my overall organ function has declined.
Additionally, due to my oily scalp, I wash my hair daily during my menstrual period.
Does washing my hair every day significantly affect my endocrine system? Could this be causing my constitution to worsen? However, my biggest concern right now is my seborrheic dermatitis.
Can you tell me what type of constitution I have? Is there an issue with my organ function, or is it due to an allergic constitution? Are there any methods to improve my constitution? What can be done to address hair loss caused by seborrheic dermatitis? I hope to use traditional Chinese medicine formulas for treatment, including medicinal meals or dietary changes, as long as they can effectively improve my condition.
Thank you very much!

Hello, Confusion: Although you have many symptoms, you have already identified your primary cause, which is confusion.
Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes the seven emotions, and an excess of these emotions can lead to an imbalance in the internal organs.
Therefore, the skin symptoms and mental depression you are experiencing are manifestations of your emotional instability over time.
I recommend that you visit a clinic for a detailed diagnosis by a physician to see if they can assist you.
At 16 years old, you should be the happiest! The Traditional Chinese Medicine Department of Changhua Hospital cares about you! Sincerely, Dr.
Chuo Bai-Ching, Director of Traditional Chinese Medicine Internal Medicine.

More Info

Seborrheic dermatitis is a common skin condition that primarily affects areas of the body rich in oil glands, such as the scalp, face, and upper back. It is characterized by red, flaky, and greasy patches of skin, often accompanied by itching. This condition can be particularly distressing for individuals, especially teenagers and young adults, as it can lead to significant cosmetic concerns and emotional distress.

Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis
The exact cause of seborrheic dermatitis is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to its development:
1. Malassezia Yeast: This type of yeast is normally present on the skin but can overgrow in certain conditions, leading to inflammation and the symptoms associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

2. Sebum Production: Increased oil production can create an environment conducive to the growth of Malassezia, exacerbating the condition.

3. Genetic Factors: A family history of seborrheic dermatitis or other skin conditions may increase the likelihood of developing this condition.

4. Environmental Factors: Stress, hormonal changes, and weather conditions (such as cold, dry air) can trigger or worsen symptoms.

5. Underlying Health Conditions: Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, HIV/AIDS, or other immune system disorders, may be more prone to seborrheic dermatitis.

Symptoms
Symptoms of seborrheic dermatitis can vary in severity and may include:
- Red, inflamed skin
- Greasy or oily patches
- Flaking or scaling skin
- Itching or burning sensations
- Dandruff on the scalp

Treatment and Remedies
While seborrheic dermatitis cannot be completely cured, it can be effectively managed through various treatment options:
1. Medicated Shampoos: Over-the-counter shampoos containing ingredients like ketoconazole, zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid, or coal tar can help reduce yeast growth and inflammation. It's essential to follow the instructions and leave the shampoo on the scalp for a few minutes before rinsing.

2. Topical Treatments: Corticosteroid creams or ointments may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and itching. However, these should be used cautiously and under medical supervision to avoid potential side effects.

3. Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a regular skincare routine, managing stress, and avoiding harsh skin products can help control flare-ups. Gentle cleansing and moisturizing can also be beneficial.

4. Dietary Considerations: While there is no specific diet for seborrheic dermatitis, a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins may support overall skin health. Foods like fish, nuts, fruits, and vegetables can be beneficial.

5. Alternative Therapies: Some individuals find relief through herbal remedies or acupuncture, but it's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any alternative treatments.

Addressing Your Concerns
Given your description of symptoms, including oily skin, acne, and hair loss, it is essential to consult a dermatologist for a comprehensive evaluation. They can help determine if your symptoms are indeed due to seborrheic dermatitis or if other underlying conditions may be contributing to your skin issues.

Regarding your concerns about daily hair washing, while it can help manage oiliness, excessive washing may irritate the scalp and lead to increased oil production over time. It’s advisable to find a balance that works for your hair and scalp condition.

As for your overall health concerns, including cold extremities, fatigue, and digestive issues, these may indicate underlying metabolic or hormonal imbalances. A healthcare provider can conduct appropriate tests to assess your internal health and recommend treatments or lifestyle changes that may improve your overall well-being.

In summary, managing seborrheic dermatitis involves a combination of proper skincare, lifestyle adjustments, and possibly medical treatments. Consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial for tailored advice and effective management of your symptoms.
