Gastrointestinal discomfort requires medical advice?
I have experienced acute gastroenteritis since I was young, and sometimes I have stomach pain about 1 to 2 times a month.
Whenever I drink cold beverages, I definitely have diarrhea, and I often drink soda.
I know it's not good for my stomach, so when I have stomach pain, I take antacids, and for abdominal pain, I take medications like Pepto-Bismol.
I also experience diarrhea after eating eggs and drinking milk.
My dad told me that long-term use of antacids can lead to cancer because of some ingredient in them.
He also mentioned that drinking green papaya juice can help relieve stomach pain, but I don't have time to drink it since adults are always busy! My dad says I have many issues: stomach pain, abdominal pain, acute gastroenteritis, hepatitis (A and B, I forgot), flat feet, funnel chest, and allergic rhinitis.
That's already seven problems! Being sick is not good.
I would like to see a doctor for any advice.
I live in Hsinchu.
Thank you!

Hello, Brother Li: Based on your description of the gastrointestinal symptoms, I cannot provide an answer regarding folk remedies due to the lack of credible research reports.
Since you live in Hsinchu, could you please visit the Gastroenterology Department at Hsinchu Hospital for a detailed examination? This will allow for a more accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

It sounds like you have been dealing with a variety of gastrointestinal issues for quite some time, and I understand how frustrating and concerning this can be. Based on your description, it seems that you experience recurrent abdominal pain, diarrhea, and possibly food intolerances, particularly to cold beverages, eggs, and milk. Additionally, you mentioned a history of acute gastroenteritis and other health concerns, including allergies and structural issues like funnel chest and flat feet.
First and foremost, it's crucial to recognize that your symptoms may be interconnected. For instance, your gastrointestinal distress could be exacerbated by certain foods or beverages, particularly those that are cold or carbonated. Cold drinks can sometimes trigger spasms in the gastrointestinal tract, leading to discomfort or diarrhea. Similarly, lactose intolerance could explain your reaction to milk, while egg intolerance might also be contributing to your symptoms.
Regarding your father's concerns about long-term use of medications like antacids (胃散), it's true that over-reliance on these medications can lead to complications. Some antacids contain aluminum or magnesium, which can cause issues if taken excessively. Chronic use of certain medications can also mask underlying conditions that may require more specific treatment. Therefore, it's essential to use these medications judiciously and under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
As for your dietary habits, it might be beneficial to keep a food diary to track what you eat and how it affects your symptoms. This can help identify specific triggers that worsen your gastrointestinal issues. Additionally, consider incorporating more easily digestible foods into your diet, such as bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast (often referred to as the BRAT diet), especially during flare-ups. Staying hydrated is also crucial, particularly if you experience diarrhea.
In terms of self-management, here are some strategies you might find helpful:
1. Dietary Modifications: Avoid known triggers such as cold drinks, carbonated beverages, and foods that you have identified as problematic. Gradually reintroduce foods to see how your body reacts.
2. Stress Management: Stress can significantly impact gastrointestinal health. Techniques such as mindfulness, yoga, or even simple breathing exercises can help manage stress levels.
3. Regular Medical Check-ups: Given your history of gastrointestinal issues, it would be wise to consult with a gastroenterologist. They can perform necessary tests, such as an endoscopy or colonoscopy, to rule out more serious conditions and provide tailored treatment options.
4. Medication Review: Discuss your current medications with your healthcare provider to ensure they are appropriate for your symptoms and to explore alternatives if necessary.
5. Probiotics: Consider incorporating probiotics into your routine, as they can help restore the natural balance of gut bacteria, which may be beneficial for digestive health.
6. Hydration: Ensure you are drinking enough fluids, especially water, to stay hydrated, particularly if you experience diarrhea.
7. Avoid Self-Medicating: While it may be tempting to self-medicate with over-the-counter remedies, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional to avoid masking symptoms of a more serious condition.
In conclusion, while it’s understandable to feel overwhelmed by your symptoms and health concerns, taking a proactive approach to your gastrointestinal health can lead to significant improvements. Consulting with a healthcare provider who can offer personalized advice and treatment options is crucial. Remember, you are not alone in this, and there are resources and support available to help you manage your health effectively.
