I can only urinate up to 90% in one go?
Hello doctor: Previously, I could empty my bladder completely in one go, but two weeks ago I noticed that I can only urinate about 90% at once, and the remaining 10% takes a while to finish.
What could be the reason for this? Thank you!

Experiencing difficulty in completely emptying your bladder can be a frustrating and concerning issue. This condition, known as urinary retention, can manifest in various ways, including the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying, a weak urine stream, or the need to strain during urination. Understanding the underlying causes and potential solutions is crucial for managing this condition effectively.
There are several possible reasons for your symptoms. One common cause is bladder outlet obstruction, which can occur due to conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men, or pelvic organ prolapse in women. These conditions can physically block the flow of urine, making it difficult for the bladder to empty completely. Another potential cause is detrusor muscle dysfunction, where the bladder muscle does not contract effectively, leading to incomplete emptying.
In addition to anatomical issues, neurological conditions can also play a role. Nerve damage or dysfunction, often resulting from diabetes, multiple sclerosis, or spinal cord injuries, can impair the signals between the bladder and the brain, affecting the ability to urinate fully. Medications, particularly those with anticholinergic properties, can also contribute to urinary retention by inhibiting bladder contractions.
In your case, since you mentioned that this issue began two weeks ago, it is essential to consider any recent changes in your health or medications. Have you started any new medications, experienced any stress, or had any recent infections? Urinary tract infections (UTIs) can cause inflammation and swelling, leading to temporary urinary retention.
To address your concerns, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a urologist, who can conduct a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, urinalysis, and possibly imaging studies or urodynamic testing to assess bladder function. These tests can help determine the exact cause of your symptoms and guide appropriate treatment.
Treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause. If the issue is due to an obstruction, surgical intervention may be necessary to relieve the blockage. For detrusor muscle dysfunction, medications that stimulate bladder contractions or therapies aimed at retraining the bladder may be recommended. In some cases, pelvic floor exercises or bladder training techniques can also be beneficial.
In the meantime, there are some strategies you can employ to help manage your symptoms. Ensure you are staying well-hydrated, as concentrated urine can irritate the bladder. Try to establish a regular bathroom schedule to encourage your bladder to empty more completely. Additionally, practicing relaxation techniques can help reduce any anxiety that may be contributing to your urinary issues.
It is important to address this issue promptly, as chronic urinary retention can lead to complications such as urinary tract infections, bladder damage, or kidney problems. Remember, you are not alone in this, and many people experience similar challenges. Seeking help from a medical professional is the best step you can take to regain control over your urinary health and improve your quality of life.
