Sudden Vision Changes: Managing Eye Health Concerns - Ophthalmology

The vision in one eye has rapidly increased to 600-700 degrees of myopia within a few months?

Hello Doctor: Recently, I experienced blurred vision and went to an optical store for an eye exam while getting new glasses.
However, after the examination, I was informed that my eye's refractive error was too severe for glasses.
Later, I went to a large hospital for further evaluation.
After reviewing my POTO (presumably referring to a type of eye examination), the doctor noted that my right cornea was normally shaped, while the upper part of my left cornea was normal, but the lower part was flattened.
The doctor mentioned corneal deformation and advised that I need to be monitored to see if the condition worsens.
I was asked to return for a follow-up in three months.
However, I was not informed about the cause of my condition or the subsequent treatment plan, and I am concerned that my symptoms may worsen within the next three months.
I am a first-year university student who often stays up late studying, and I also have allergy symptoms, which cause my eyes to itch and lead me to rub them frequently.
In March and April of this year, I participated in a military school health examination, which only indicated a worsening of my vision, but I passed the examination.
Last year, during a police academy health check, my vision was normal, so the deterioration must have occurred in the past few months.
My biggest concern is whether my condition will worsen and how it will significantly impact my academic performance, especially due to excessive eye strain from reading and staying up late to study.
What should I do to take care of my eyes now?

Hello: Based on the described situation, it seems there is an issue with the curvature of the cornea.
It is recommended to stop wearing contact lenses and to follow up with your physician.
If it is a case of keratoconus, you may ask the treating physician for a detailed explanation.
Generally, the likelihood of rapid deterioration within three months is low.
You may also refer to some medical educational materials or consult an ophthalmologist for further diagnosis and explanation.
Sincerely, Dr.
Mei-Lan Ke, Chief of Ophthalmology.

Sudden changes in vision can be alarming, especially when they are accompanied by symptoms like blurriness or discomfort. Your situation, where you have been diagnosed with a corneal irregularity, raises several important considerations regarding eye health and management.

Firstly, it is crucial to understand the nature of your corneal condition. The fact that your right eye has a normal corneal shape while your left eye exhibits a flattened area suggests a possible condition known as keratoconus or another form of corneal ectasia. These conditions can lead to significant visual distortion and may require specialized management. The observation period of three months is standard; however, it is essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your vision during this time.

Given your concerns about potential deterioration, it is advisable to maintain regular communication with your eye care provider. If you notice any worsening symptoms, such as increased blurriness, discomfort, or changes in light sensitivity, you should seek an earlier appointment. Additionally, consider asking your doctor for more information about your condition, including potential causes and treatment options. Understanding your diagnosis can alleviate anxiety and help you make informed decisions about your eye care.

As a college student, your lifestyle choices can significantly impact your eye health. Long hours of studying, especially under artificial lighting, can contribute to eye strain and exacerbate any existing conditions. Here are some practical tips to help manage your eye health:
1. Take Regular Breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This practice helps reduce eye strain.

2. Optimize Lighting: Ensure that your study area is well-lit to minimize glare and strain on your eyes. Use task lighting that reduces shadows and provides even illumination.

3. Limit Screen Time: If possible, reduce the amount of time spent on screens, including computers, tablets, and smartphones. If you must use screens, consider using blue light filters or glasses designed to reduce eye strain.

4. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your body and eyes hydrated. Dehydration can lead to dry eyes, which can worsen discomfort.

5. Manage Allergies: Since you mentioned having allergy symptoms, managing these can also help your eyes. Consider using antihistamines or other allergy medications as recommended by your healthcare provider to reduce itching and irritation.

6. Regular Eye Exams: Continue with regular eye examinations, especially since you have a known corneal issue. Your eye care provider may recommend specialized contact lenses or other treatments to help manage your condition.

7. Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintain a balanced diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants, which are beneficial for eye health. Regular exercise and adequate sleep are also important for overall well-being.

Regarding your concerns about the potential for your condition to worsen, it is important to note that while some corneal conditions can progress, others may stabilize or improve with appropriate management. Your eye care provider will be able to monitor your condition and recommend interventions if necessary, such as specialty contact lenses, corneal cross-linking, or, in some cases, surgical options.

In summary, while it is natural to feel anxious about sudden changes in vision, proactive management and regular communication with your eye care provider can help you navigate your condition effectively. By adopting healthy habits and staying informed about your eye health, you can minimize the impact of your condition on your academic and personal life.
