Is it folliculitis?
Hello Doctor: A few days ago, I noticed a small lump in my left armpit that hurts when pressed.
I previously had folliculitis in my right armpit, so I suspect it might be a similar condition.
However, in this case, when I push the surrounding tissue outward, a purulent-like substance oozes out, and I also noticed a small opening at the center of the lump.
Can this condition be treated with medication? Thank you for your answer, Doctor.

More Info
Folliculitis is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacterial infection, irritation, or blockage. It can manifest as small red bumps or white-headed pimples around hair follicles, and it may be painful or itchy. In your case, the presence of a painful lump in your left armpit that produces pus when pressed suggests that you may indeed be experiencing folliculitis or a similar condition, such as an abscess.
The symptoms you describe—pain upon pressure, the presence of pus, and a small opening at the center of the lump—are indicative of an infection. In some cases, folliculitis can progress to a more severe form, leading to the formation of a boil or abscess, which is a collection of pus that can occur when the infection spreads deeper into the skin.
Treatment options for folliculitis typically depend on the severity and cause of the condition. For mild cases, topical antibiotics or antiseptic washes may be sufficient to clear the infection. If the folliculitis is more severe or if an abscess has formed, oral antibiotics may be necessary. In some cases, drainage of the abscess may be required to relieve pressure and promote healing.
Given your history of folliculitis in the right armpit, it is possible that you are prone to this condition. Factors that can contribute to recurrent folliculitis include:
1. Hygiene: Poor hygiene can lead to the accumulation of bacteria and dead skin cells, increasing the risk of infection.
2. Shaving or Waxing: These activities can irritate the hair follicles, making them more susceptible to infection.
3. Tight Clothing: Wearing tight clothing can cause friction and irritation in the armpit area, leading to folliculitis.
4. Underlying Conditions: Conditions such as diabetes or immune system disorders can increase the risk of skin infections.
In your situation, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. They may perform a physical examination and, if necessary, take a sample of the pus for laboratory analysis to identify the causative organism. This information can guide the choice of antibiotics and ensure effective treatment.
In the meantime, you can take some self-care measures to alleviate symptoms and prevent further irritation:
- Keep the Area Clean: Gently wash the affected area with mild soap and water.
- Avoid Irritation: Refrain from shaving or using harsh products on the area until it has healed.
- Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress can help reduce pain and promote drainage if an abscess is present.
- Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help manage pain and inflammation.
In conclusion, while it is possible that your symptoms are due to folliculitis, a proper evaluation by a healthcare provider is crucial for determining the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and promote faster healing. If you notice any worsening of symptoms, such as increased redness, swelling, or fever, seek medical attention promptly.
