Drug testing
Hello, I would like to inquire if there are hospitals in Chiayi that can test the contents of a medication.
The reason is that a friend recently introduced me to a traditional Chinese medicine for treating skin issues, claiming it is a family secret recipe.
My friend collected the herbs themselves, but I am unsure of the contents and whether it might cause any problems if I take it.
Therefore, I would like to know where I can find out if the medication is harmful.
Additionally, what are the related costs for testing? Thank you.

Hello; if you want to test a medication, you can first call the local health bureau for inquiries.
Taichung has a Drug and Food Inspection Bureau, and Chiayi should have one as well.
However, I believe that if it’s something you consume, it’s best not to experiment carelessly, as it could damage your kidneys, which is not something to take lightly.
Is this response acceptable? Wishing you safety and good health.

More Info
In Chiayi, Taiwan, if you are looking for testing services for herbal medicine to ensure its safety and content, there are a few options you can consider. The primary institutions that can assist with this type of testing are the local health departments and specialized laboratories that focus on herbal medicine analysis.
1. Chiayi City Health Bureau: The local health bureau is a good starting point. They can provide information on where to get herbal medicine tested and may have recommendations for laboratories that conduct such analyses. You can contact them directly to inquire about the specific services they offer and any associated costs.
2. Taiwan Food and Drug Administration (TFDA): The TFDA oversees the safety and efficacy of food and drugs in Taiwan, including herbal products. They may have resources or can direct you to accredited laboratories that perform testing on herbal medicines. You can visit their website or contact them for more detailed information.
3. Universities and Research Institutions: Some universities in Taiwan, particularly those with strong programs in traditional Chinese medicine or pharmacology, may have laboratories that conduct testing on herbal products. For example, National Taiwan University or other local universities may have the capability to analyze herbal ingredients for safety and efficacy.
4. Private Laboratories: There are private laboratories that specialize in testing herbal medicines. These labs can analyze the content of the herbs, check for contaminants, and assess the safety of the product. You may need to search online or ask for recommendations from local health practitioners to find a reputable lab.
5. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Clinics: Some TCM clinics may also offer testing services or can refer you to a reliable laboratory. Practitioners in these clinics often have knowledge about the safety of various herbal products and can guide you on the best course of action.
Regarding the costs associated with testing herbal medicine, this can vary widely depending on the type of analysis required. Basic tests for contaminants may be less expensive, while comprehensive analyses that include ingredient verification and potency testing could be more costly. It is advisable to contact the specific laboratory or institution to get a detailed quote based on your testing needs.
In summary, if you are concerned about the safety of the herbal medicine you are considering, it is crucial to have it tested by a reputable laboratory. This will help ensure that the product is safe for consumption and does not contain harmful substances. Always consult with a healthcare professional before starting any new treatment, especially if it involves herbal remedies, as they can provide guidance based on your individual health needs and conditions.
