Bowel movement issues
Recently, I have noticed that after bowel movements, there are occasionally white attachments on the stool that feel thick.
Most of the time, this occurs at the beginning of the bowel movement.
What could be the cause? For the past two days, I have been experiencing frequent abdominal pain and the urge to have diarrhea, but when I do go to the bathroom, it doesn't feel like diarrhea.
I also have a burning sensation in the upper abdomen, which is most noticeable before bed and upon waking.
Sometimes I feel nauseous, and at times the pain is severe enough to cause tightness in my chest and back.
What could be going on? Thank you!

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello, Luck: Please first have a stool test (gastroenterology outpatient).
Most likely, it is due to indigestion (irritable bowel syndrome), which can be managed with medication when severe, along with dietary adjustments.
Additionally, there may be gastritis (or a gastric ulcer), so please visit the gastroenterology outpatient department for further treatment.

The presence of white mucus in stool can be concerning, and it is important to understand the potential causes and symptoms associated with this condition. Mucus is a normal component of the digestive system, produced by the intestines to lubricate the lining and facilitate the passage of stool. However, an increase in mucus production or changes in its appearance can indicate underlying health issues.
In your case, the observation of white, thick mucus attached to the stool, particularly at the beginning of a bowel movement, may be linked to several factors. One common cause is irritation or inflammation of the intestinal lining, which can occur due to conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infections, or inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis. These conditions can lead to symptoms such as abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, and the presence of mucus in the stool.
The abdominal pain you are experiencing, along with the burning sensation in the upper abdomen, could be indicative of gastrointestinal distress. This discomfort may be exacerbated by factors such as dietary choices, stress, or gastrointestinal infections. The fact that you feel a burning sensation and sometimes experience nausea or chest and back discomfort could suggest a more complex issue, possibly involving the esophagus or stomach, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or gastritis.
It is also worth noting that the presence of white mucus can sometimes be associated with infections, including viral or bacterial gastroenteritis. In such cases, the mucus may be accompanied by other symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, or vomiting. If the mucus is due to a more serious condition, such as a parasitic infection or a malignancy, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
Given the symptoms you have described—abdominal pain, burning sensations, and the presence of mucus—it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. A doctor may recommend diagnostic tests such as stool analysis, blood tests, or imaging studies to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. They may also inquire about your dietary habits, recent illnesses, and any medications you are taking, as these factors can significantly influence gastrointestinal health.
In summary, while the presence of white mucus in stool can be a normal occurrence, changes in its appearance or an increase in production may warrant further investigation. The symptoms you are experiencing, including abdominal pain and discomfort, should not be ignored. A healthcare provider can help identify the root cause and recommend appropriate treatment options to alleviate your symptoms and improve your overall digestive health. Remember, early intervention is key to managing gastrointestinal issues effectively.
