Can surgery be performed again after laser treatment in older adults?
I am nearsighted with about 1000 degrees of myopia and am considering laser surgery.
However, I have heard that if I undergo surgery now, I may not be able to have another surgery later in life if I develop cataracts or other conditions that require surgery, as the eyes can only undergo surgery once.
Is this true? What is the approximate cost of laser surgery? Where in Taichung City can I find facilities that perform laser surgery? Thank you!

Dr. Ke Meilan reply Ophthalmology
Hello: Cataract surgery can still be performed after LASIK, but it is best to retain the corneal curvature values and axial length measurements from before the LASIK procedure.
The additional cost for using a wavefront-guided approach is approximately NT$50,000.
I apologize for not being familiar with the ophthalmology environment in Taichung.
Sincerely, Dr.
Ke Meilan.

When considering laser eye surgery, particularly for individuals with high myopia (nearsightedness) like yourself, there are several important factors to weigh, especially as you age. The concern about undergoing additional surgeries later in life, such as cataract surgery, is a common one.
Firstly, it is important to clarify that laser eye surgery, such as LASIK or PRK, does not preclude you from having other eye surgeries in the future. While it is true that the cornea is altered during laser surgery, this does not mean that you cannot have cataract surgery or other procedures later on. In fact, many patients who have had laser eye surgery go on to have successful cataract surgeries when needed. The key is to have a thorough evaluation by an experienced ophthalmologist who can assess the health of your eyes and determine the best course of action.
As for the concern about being unable to undergo surgery again, it is essential to understand that while laser surgery changes the shape of the cornea, it does not eliminate the possibility of future surgeries. If cataracts develop, they can be treated effectively with surgery, and the presence of prior laser surgery is generally not a contraindication. However, it is crucial to have realistic expectations and to discuss your specific situation with your eye care provider.
Regarding the cost of laser eye surgery, prices can vary significantly based on the technology used, the surgeon's experience, and the specific clinic. In Taiwan, the cost for LASIK can range from approximately NT$30,000 to NT$60,000 per eye, depending on the factors mentioned above. It's advisable to consult with several clinics to get a comprehensive understanding of the costs involved and what is included in the price (such as pre-operative evaluations and post-operative care).
In Taichung, there are several reputable clinics that offer laser eye surgery. Some well-known facilities include the Taichung Veterans General Hospital and various private eye clinics that specialize in refractive surgery. It is recommended to research these options, read patient reviews, and consult with the clinics directly to find the best fit for your needs.
In summary, while there are valid concerns regarding future eye health and the potential need for additional surgeries, laser eye surgery does not inherently limit your options later in life. It is crucial to have open discussions with your ophthalmologist about your specific circumstances, including your high degree of myopia and any potential risks involved. They can provide personalized advice and help you make an informed decision about whether laser eye surgery is the right choice for you at this stage in your life.
