About bowel movements?
A few days ago, I felt like I didn't fully empty my bowels.
Even after straining, I still felt incomplete.
When I wiped, there was bright red blood on the tissue.
Later, after taking a shower, I inserted my finger into my anus and felt a lump.
Up until today, I still have the sensation of incomplete bowel movements when I strain, and I can't seem to wipe clean.
Could this be hemorrhoids, or is there something else going on?

Hello: Hard stools and blood from the anus, considering your age, common causes include anal fissures, hemorrhoids, and inflammation of the rectum and anus.
It is recommended to increase fluid intake and consume more fiber.
If discomfort persists or you have any questions, please consult a colorectal surgeon or a gastroenterologist.
Sincerely, Dr.
Lin Ming-Hui, Internal Medicine.

Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a range of bowel issues that could indeed be related to hemorrhoids, but there are also other potential factors at play. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum and anus that can cause discomfort, bleeding, and a sensation of incomplete evacuation during bowel movements. The bright red blood you noticed on the toilet paper is a common symptom of hemorrhoids, especially if it appears after straining during a bowel movement.
However, the sensation of not being able to fully empty your bowels and the presence of a lump or "granular" feeling in the rectal area could indicate other conditions as well. For instance, anal fissures, which are small tears in the lining of the anus, can also cause bleeding and pain during bowel movements. Additionally, conditions like rectal prolapse or even more serious issues such as polyps or tumors could present with similar symptoms, although these are less common, especially in younger individuals.
Given your history of constipation and the fact that you have been straining during bowel movements, it is possible that you have developed hemorrhoids or anal fissures as a result of this straining. Chronic constipation can lead to hard stools, which require more effort to pass, increasing the risk of these conditions. The feeling of incomplete evacuation is also common in cases of constipation, as the stool may not be fully expelled, leading to discomfort and the urge to go again shortly after.
It is important to consider your dietary habits and lifestyle as well. A diet low in fiber can contribute to constipation, so increasing your intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may help improve your bowel movements. Staying hydrated is also crucial, as adequate water intake can soften stools and make them easier to pass.
In terms of management, if you suspect hemorrhoids, there are several over-the-counter treatments available, such as topical creams and suppositories that can help alleviate symptoms. However, if the bleeding persists, or if you experience severe pain, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. A doctor may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend further tests, such as a colonoscopy, to rule out any serious underlying conditions.
In summary, while your symptoms may suggest hemorrhoids, it is crucial to seek medical advice to confirm the diagnosis and receive appropriate treatment. Maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding straining during bowel movements can help prevent further issues. If you continue to experience symptoms or have concerns about your bowel health, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare provider for guidance.
