Genital pain

Hello, I suddenly started experiencing unexplained swelling and pain about 4 to 5 days ago.
I initially thought it was due to inflammation or infection, but there has been no discharge or unusual odor.
I came across a theory suggesting it could be related to hormonal changes, and I took emergency contraception 10 days before I started feeling the swelling and pain.
Could this be the cause, or could it be due to other pathological symptoms?

Understanding unexplained genital pain can be quite concerning, and it’s important to approach this issue with a comprehensive understanding of potential causes and implications. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced sudden swelling and pain in the genital area without any accompanying discharge or odor, which can help narrow down the possible causes.

One potential explanation for your symptoms could be related to hormonal changes, especially considering that you mentioned taking emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill") about ten days prior to the onset of your symptoms. Emergency contraceptive pills can cause various side effects, including hormonal fluctuations that may lead to breast tenderness, changes in menstrual cycles, and in some cases, pelvic discomfort. However, it is essential to note that while hormonal changes can contribute to discomfort, they typically do not cause significant swelling or pain in the genital area.

Another possibility is that you may be experiencing a localized infection or inflammation, such as vulvitis or vaginitis, which can occur without noticeable discharge or odor. These conditions can be caused by various factors, including irritants (such as soaps or hygiene products), allergies, or even friction. Additionally, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) can sometimes present with minimal symptoms, so it is crucial to consider this possibility, especially if there has been any change in sexual activity.

Other potential causes of unexplained genital pain include:
1. Cysts or Abscesses: Bartholin's cysts, for example, can develop and cause localized swelling and pain. These cysts form when the glands that lubricate the vagina become blocked.

2. Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): This is an infection of the reproductive organs that can cause pain and swelling. PID can occur without significant discharge, especially in its early stages.

3. Musculoskeletal Issues: Sometimes, pain in the genital area can be referred pain from the pelvic floor muscles or other musculoskeletal structures. Tension or strain in these muscles can lead to discomfort that may feel like it is originating from the genital area.

4. Nerve-related Pain: Conditions such as vulvodynia or pudendal neuralgia can cause chronic pain in the genital area without any visible signs of infection or inflammation.

Given the complexity of the potential causes, it is advisable to seek medical attention if the pain persists or worsens. A healthcare provider can perform a thorough examination, which may include a pelvic exam, and possibly recommend tests such as a urine analysis or swabs to rule out infections. They may also consider imaging studies if there is suspicion of cysts or other structural issues.

In summary, while hormonal changes from emergency contraception could contribute to your symptoms, it is essential to consider a range of other potential causes. Prompt evaluation by a healthcare professional is crucial to determine the underlying issue and to receive appropriate treatment. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to unexplained pain, especially in sensitive areas.
