There is a small, round, somewhat hard lump on the left side of my neck?
I noticed a small, round, somewhat hard lump on the left side of my neck, and it hurts when I press on it.
It's located about five centimeters below my ear, near the edge of the bone.
I feel pain when I turn my head slightly to the left, and it has been painful for about two days.
What could this be?

Dear love24271,
Hello, this is Dr.
Hsu Kai-Hsi from the Department of Surgery at Tainan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.
The sudden occurrence of painful, hard lumps on the skin is often due to inflammation of sebaceous glands or hair follicles.
Additionally, a slightly extended subcutaneous lump may indicate inflammation of lymph nodes.
I recommend visiting the surgical outpatient clinic at Tainan Hospital during an episode to ensure your health is properly assessed.
Best regards,
Dr.

When you discover a hard lump on the left side of your neck, particularly one that is painful to the touch and located near the bone, it can understandably cause concern. There are several potential causes for such a lump, and understanding these can help you determine the next steps for evaluation and treatment.
One common cause of a hard lump in the neck is a swollen lymph node. Lymph nodes can become enlarged due to various reasons, including infections (viral or bacterial), inflammation, or even malignancies. Given that you mentioned the lump is painful, this could suggest that it is reactive, possibly due to an infection in the area, such as a throat infection or dental issue. Lymph nodes often swell in response to infections as they work to filter out pathogens and produce immune cells.
Another possibility is that the lump could be a cyst, such as a sebaceous cyst, which is a benign growth that can occur when a hair follicle becomes clogged. These cysts can sometimes become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and tenderness.
Muscle tension or strain can also lead to the formation of hard lumps in the neck area. If you have been experiencing stress, poor posture, or have engaged in activities that strain your neck muscles, this could result in muscle knots or trigger points that feel hard and may be painful when pressed.
In some cases, a hard lump could indicate a more serious condition, such as a tumor. While this is less common, it is essential to consider all possibilities, especially if the lump persists, grows, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or difficulty swallowing.
Given that you have experienced pain for about two days, it is advisable to monitor the lump closely. If it does not improve, continues to grow, or if you develop additional symptoms, you should seek medical attention. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound or CT scan, to better understand the nature of the lump. Blood tests may also be conducted to check for signs of infection or other underlying conditions.
In summary, while a hard lump on the neck can be concerning, many causes are benign and treatable. It is crucial to pay attention to any changes in the lump or accompanying symptoms and to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Early diagnosis and appropriate management can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
