There is a sharp pain about two fingerbreadths below the earlobe on the neck?

Hello doctor, since yesterday I have been experiencing a persistent sharp pain in my neck, about two finger widths below my right earlobe.
I am very worried and don't know why this is happening.
Is this a natural phenomenon, or should I see a doctor? If I need to see a doctor, which specialty should I consult?

More Info

Neck pain near the ear can be concerning, especially when it persists or is accompanied by other symptoms. Given your description of a continuous, sharp pain located near the right ear lobe, it is essential to consider several potential causes and when to seek medical attention.

Possible Causes of Pain Near the Ear
1. Muscle Strain: One of the most common causes of pain in this area is muscle strain. Poor posture, prolonged periods of looking down (such as when using a smartphone or computer), or sleeping in an awkward position can lead to muscle tension and pain.

2. Cervical Radiculopathy: This condition occurs when a nerve in the neck is compressed or irritated, often due to a herniated disc or degenerative changes in the cervical spine. Symptoms can include pain that radiates down the arm, numbness, or tingling.

3. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders: TMJ disorders can cause pain that radiates to the ear and neck. This pain may be exacerbated by jaw movement, such as chewing or yawning.

4. Ear Infections: While less common, infections in the ear can sometimes cause referred pain to the neck area. If you experience additional symptoms like fever, drainage from the ear, or hearing changes, this could be a possibility.

5. Nerve Issues: Conditions affecting the nerves, such as neuralgia (nerve pain), can lead to sharp, shooting pains in the neck and ear area.

6. Cervical Spondylosis: Age-related wear and tear on the cervical spine can lead to pain and stiffness in the neck, which may radiate to nearby areas, including the ear.

When to Seek Medical Help
You should consider seeking medical attention if:
- The pain persists for more than a few days without improvement.

- You experience additional symptoms such as fever, swelling, or redness.

- The pain is severe and affects your daily activities.

- You notice any neurological symptoms, such as weakness, numbness, or tingling in the arms or hands.

- You have a history of neck or spine issues that could be exacerbated.

Which Specialist to See
Given your symptoms, the most appropriate specialists to consult would be:
- Primary Care Physician: They can perform an initial evaluation and determine if further specialist care is needed.

- Neurologist: If nerve issues are suspected, a neurologist can assess and diagnose conditions related to nerve pain.

- Orthopedic Specialist: An orthopedic doctor specializing in the spine can evaluate any structural issues in the cervical spine.

- Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Specialist: If there are concerns about ear-related issues, an ENT can provide a thorough examination.

Conclusion
In summary, while neck pain near the ear can sometimes be due to benign causes like muscle strain, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional concerning symptoms, seeking medical attention is advisable. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure appropriate treatment. Remember to maintain good posture, take breaks from prolonged activities, and consider gentle stretching exercises to alleviate tension in the neck.
