There is something in the nose?

Hello Doctor: I have a bump inside my left nostril that feels similar to an acne pimple, but it is slightly larger and somewhat soft.
It doesn't hurt when I press on it.
Its location is just above the left nostril, close to the nasal bone, and I can feel it with my finger after inserting it a little.
It has been there for many years, but it hasn't caused any issues.
What could it be? Is it possible to treat it with laser?

Didi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/10/13

Dr. Xu Jiazhen reply Otolaryngology

Hello: In response to your question, these are generally benign tumors.
If they affect your breathing or cause bleeding, please consult an otolaryngologist.

When it comes to nasal growths, it is essential to understand the various types of conditions that can manifest within the nasal cavity. The growth you described, which feels similar to a pimple but slightly larger and soft to the touch, could potentially be a few different things. Given that it has been present for several years without causing significant issues, it may be benign. However, a thorough evaluation by an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment options.

Possible Types of Nasal Growths
1. Nasal Polyps: These are soft, painless, noncancerous growths that can develop on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses due to chronic inflammation. They are often associated with conditions like asthma, allergies, or chronic sinus infections. Nasal polyps can vary in size and may cause nasal obstruction, but they can also be asymptomatic.

2. Sebaceous Cysts: These are small lumps that can occur in various parts of the body, including the nose. They are typically filled with a fatty substance and can feel soft. They are usually harmless but can become infected or inflamed.

3. Fibromas or Lipomas: These are benign tumors that can develop in the nasal cavity. Fibromas are fibrous tissue tumors, while lipomas are composed of fatty tissue. Both types are generally painless and slow-growing.

4. Other Benign Tumors: There are other types of benign tumors that can occur in the nasal cavity, such as hemangiomas (blood vessel tumors) or neurofibromas (nerve sheath tumors). These are less common but can also present as soft growths.

Diagnostic Approach
To determine the exact nature of the growth, an ENT specialist may perform a nasal endoscopy, which involves using a thin, flexible tube with a camera to visualize the nasal passages and sinuses. This procedure allows for a direct view of the growth and can help in assessing its characteristics.

Treatment Options
If the growth is determined to be a nasal polyp or another benign condition, treatment options may include:
- Observation: If the growth is asymptomatic and not causing any issues, it may simply be monitored over time.

- Medications: For nasal polyps, corticosteroid nasal sprays can help reduce inflammation and shrink the growths.

- Surgical Removal: If the growth is causing obstruction or other symptoms, or if there is any concern about its nature, surgical removal may be recommended. This can often be done using minimally invasive techniques, including laser surgery, which can effectively remove the growth with minimal recovery time.

Conclusion
In summary, while the growth you described may be benign, it is essential to have it evaluated by a medical professional to rule out any serious conditions. The ENT specialist will provide a comprehensive assessment and recommend appropriate treatment based on the diagnosis. If you are considering laser treatment, discuss this option with your doctor, as they can provide guidance on whether it is suitable for your specific case. Remember, early evaluation and intervention can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
