Pregnancy discomfort issues
Hello Doctor:
1.
I am currently 11 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing frequent lower back discomfort.
Sometimes, after walking just a short distance, my abdomen feels sore (but not painful).
Is this a normal phenomenon?
2.
Due to morning sickness, I often experience acid reflux and bloating, which makes it difficult to eat, and my weight has been decreasing.
What foods can help alleviate these symptoms? Are there any foods I should avoid?
3.
I am concerned that walking too much will worsen my lower back discomfort, so I tend to sit almost all day.
Does this increase abdominal pressure and affect the fetus?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!

Hello: 1.
Lower back pain during pregnancy is common, but whether it is physiological or caused by other issues needs to be evaluated.
2.
If there is a decrease in weight during pregnancy, an assessment should be conducted to determine if antiemetic medication is needed to improve the condition.
3.
Sitting has little relation to abdominal pressure.

Managing discomfort during pregnancy is a common concern for many expectant mothers, and it’s important to understand that experiencing discomfort is often a normal part of the process. Here’s a detailed response to your questions based on medical knowledge and common practices.
1. Lower Back Pain and Abdominal Discomfort: It is quite common for women in the early stages of pregnancy, such as at 11 weeks, to experience lower back pain and mild abdominal discomfort. As your body adjusts to the changes brought on by pregnancy, hormonal shifts and the growing uterus can lead to these sensations. The ligaments in your body are also loosening to accommodate the growing baby, which can contribute to discomfort in the lower back and abdomen. However, if the discomfort escalates to severe pain or is accompanied by other symptoms such as bleeding, it’s crucial to consult your healthcare provider to rule out any complications.
2. Managing Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Many pregnant women experience gastrointestinal issues such as acid reflux, bloating, and nausea, often referred to as "morning sickness," although it can occur at any time of the day. To alleviate these symptoms, consider the following dietary adjustments:
- Foods to Include: Eating small, frequent meals can help manage nausea and prevent the stomach from becoming too empty. Foods that are bland and easy to digest, such as crackers, rice, bananas, and applesauce, can be beneficial. Ginger tea or ginger candies may also help with nausea. Staying hydrated is essential, so drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Foods to Avoid: It’s advisable to steer clear of spicy, fatty, or fried foods, as these can exacerbate acid reflux and bloating. Caffeine and carbonated beverages may also contribute to discomfort, so limiting these can be helpful.
3. Physical Activity and Its Impact: While it’s understandable to be cautious about physical activity due to discomfort, it’s important to strike a balance. Prolonged sitting can lead to increased abdominal pressure and may contribute to discomfort or even complications like deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Gentle movement is beneficial for circulation and can help alleviate some discomfort. Consider incorporating light activities such as walking or prenatal yoga into your routine. These activities can help strengthen your back and core muscles, which may reduce pain. If you find that walking causes discomfort, try shorter, more frequent walks rather than long periods of sitting.
In summary, while discomfort during pregnancy is common, it’s essential to listen to your body and make adjustments as needed. If you experience severe pain, persistent gastrointestinal issues, or any other concerning symptoms, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and support. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and help ensure a healthy pregnancy for both you and your baby. Remember, taking care of your mental and physical well-being is crucial during this transformative time.
