Upper eyelid swelling
Hello doctor, about a year ago I wore contact lenses for a long time and experienced photophobia, eye pain, tearing, and redness with swelling in my upper eyelid.
After treatment from a doctor, my eye condition has improved significantly, but the redness and swelling in my upper eyelid have persisted for a year without resolution.
I have seen doctors who said there is no issue.
How can I reduce the swelling? =(

Dr. Zhang Yanrui reply Ophthalmology
The best method for reducing swelling is ice application.
However, if all the doctors believe that you are not swollen, does that mean you are truly not swollen? You might also try stopping the use of contact lenses, as it could potentially improve the situation.
Additionally, you can compare your current appearance with older photos; it’s possible that your upper eyelids have always had some swelling, and you are just noticing it more recently.

More Info
Persistent eyelid swelling, especially when accompanied by redness and discomfort, can be a frustrating issue. Based on your description, it seems that you have experienced significant eye discomfort after wearing contact lenses for extended periods, which led to symptoms such as photophobia (light sensitivity), eye pain, tearing, and the appearance of red veins and swelling in the upper eyelid. Although your eye condition has improved with treatment, the persistent redness and swelling in the eyelid remain a concern.
Possible Causes of Persistent Eyelid Swelling:
1. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to contact lens materials, solutions, or environmental allergens (like pollen, dust, or pet dander) can cause chronic inflammation and swelling of the eyelids.
2. Chronic Inflammation: Conditions such as blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelid margins) or meibomian gland dysfunction can lead to persistent swelling and redness. These conditions often result from bacterial infections or clogged oil glands.
3. Contact Lens Overuse: Wearing contact lenses for extended periods without proper hygiene can lead to irritation and inflammation of the eyelids. This can cause the blood vessels in the eyelids to become more prominent, leading to a red appearance.
4. Dry Eye Syndrome: Prolonged contact lens wear can exacerbate dry eye symptoms, leading to irritation and inflammation of the eyelids.
5. Dermatitis: Contact dermatitis from eye makeup, skin care products, or contact lens solutions can also cause swelling and redness.
Treatment Options:
1. Cold Compresses: Applying a cold compress to the affected eyelid can help reduce swelling and provide relief from discomfort. This can be done several times a day for 10-15 minutes.
2. Artificial Tears: If dryness is contributing to your symptoms, using preservative-free artificial tears can help lubricate the eyes and reduce irritation.
3. Antihistamines: If allergies are suspected, over-the-counter oral antihistamines or antihistamine eye drops may help alleviate symptoms.
4. Proper Contact Lens Hygiene: Ensure that you are following proper hygiene practices when using contact lenses. This includes washing your hands before handling lenses, using fresh solutions, and not exceeding the recommended wear time.
5. Consultation with an Eye Specialist: Since the swelling has persisted for a year, it may be beneficial to consult with an ophthalmologist or an eye specialist who can perform a thorough examination. They may recommend additional treatments such as prescription eye drops, steroid ointments, or other interventions to address the underlying cause of the inflammation.
6. Avoiding Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants, such as certain cosmetics or skin care products that may exacerbate your symptoms.
7. Lifestyle Modifications: If you are a frequent contact lens wearer, consider switching to daily disposable lenses or taking regular breaks from lens wear to give your eyes a chance to recover.
Conclusion:
Persistent eyelid swelling can be a complex issue that may require a multifaceted approach to treatment. It is essential to work closely with your eye care provider to identify the underlying cause of your symptoms and develop an appropriate treatment plan. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, further evaluation may be necessary to rule out any serious conditions. Remember that your comfort and eye health are paramount, and seeking professional advice is always a good step in managing persistent eye issues.
