Can acne occur on the breasts?

Hello, Dr.
Wu! While taking a shower, I noticed a round bump above the outer edge of my right areola (right at the junction between the areola and the surrounding skin).
It resembles a pimple or a cyst, and its size is similar to the small protrusions on the areola (which I believe are called "papillae," but I'm not sure if I'm using the correct term...).
To be precise, it is slightly larger than the adjacent papillae.
When I touch it, it feels a bit firm and is not painful (similar to the sensation of touching a pimple on my face), while the papillae on the areola feel soft.
Therefore, I would like to ask if it is possible for the breast (areola) to develop pimples? I’m not sure how long this has been there, as I just discovered it today, and I feel a bit worried.
I would greatly appreciate your clarification, thank you very much!

I'm sorry, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2006/10/31

Breast skin conditions can indeed manifest in various forms, including the appearance of pimples or bumps on the breast and are often a source of concern for many individuals. The area around the areola (the pigmented area surrounding the nipple) can develop various types of lesions, including sebaceous cysts, folliculitis, or even benign growths like fibroadenomas.
From your description, it sounds like you may be experiencing a benign condition. The bump you described, which feels hard and resembles a pimple, could be a sebaceous cyst or a blocked hair follicle. Sebaceous cysts are common and occur when the sebaceous glands become clogged. They are usually painless, firm, and can vary in size. If the bump is not painful and has been present for a while without any changes, it is likely benign.

Additionally, the skin on the breast, including the areola, is sensitive and can react to various factors such as hormonal changes, friction from clothing, or even skin conditions like eczema or dermatitis. These factors can lead to the development of small bumps or changes in texture.
It’s also worth noting that the Montgomery glands, which are small sebaceous glands located on the areola, can sometimes become more prominent or inflamed, leading to a bump-like appearance. This is a normal physiological change and can be influenced by hormonal fluctuations, especially during menstrual cycles or pregnancy.

If you are experiencing any other symptoms, such as pain, significant changes in the size or appearance of the bump, or if there is any discharge, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess the nature of the bump further.
In terms of self-care, maintaining good hygiene and wearing breathable fabrics can help prevent irritation in the breast area. If you notice any signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.

In conclusion, while it is possible for the breast area to develop pimple-like bumps, many of these conditions are benign. However, if you have concerns about any changes in your breast tissue, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation and peace of mind. Regular self-examinations and awareness of your body are crucial in identifying any changes early on.
