Severe pain in the left chest?

In the past, I occasionally experienced chest pain that would disappear after a short time.
However, over the past few years, the chest pain has become more frequent and prolonged.
About a year and a half ago, I underwent laparoscopic surgery on my right ovary, and after the anesthesia wore off, I experienced severe pain in my left chest that made it difficult to breathe.
Although the doctor performed an electrocardiogram at that time, no cause was identified.
Recently, the frequency of the pain has increased, and it radiates to my left upper back and left arm, which has led me to consider seeking medical attention.
Which specialty should I consult? Thank you!

DEAR CYNTHIA, based on your symptoms, it is possible that you are experiencing mitral valve prolapse.
It is advisable to visit a cardiology clinic for further evaluation.

Severe left chest pain can be a concerning symptom that warrants immediate medical attention. Given your history of intermittent chest pain that has become more frequent and severe, it is crucial to take this seriously. Chest pain can arise from various causes, including cardiac, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and even psychological factors.
Based on your description, the pain radiates to your left shoulder and back, which can be indicative of a cardiac issue, particularly if it is accompanied by shortness of breath or other symptoms like sweating, nausea, or lightheadedness. The fact that you experienced severe pain after a procedure and that it has been increasing in frequency and intensity over time is particularly concerning.
When considering which specialist to consult, it is advisable to start with a cardiologist. A cardiologist specializes in heart-related conditions and can perform necessary tests such as an electrocardiogram (ECG), echocardiogram, or stress tests to evaluate your heart's function and rule out conditions like angina or myocardial infarction (heart attack). Given that you have already undergone an ECG that did not reveal any issues, it may be beneficial to discuss further testing options with a cardiologist, especially considering the increase in pain severity and frequency.

If the cardiologist rules out cardiac causes, you may then consider consulting other specialists based on the findings. For instance, if the pain is determined to be musculoskeletal in nature, a rheumatologist or orthopedic specialist may be appropriate. If gastrointestinal issues are suspected, a gastroenterologist could be consulted.
It is also important to consider lifestyle factors that may contribute to your symptoms. Stress, anxiety, and poor posture can exacerbate chest pain and should be addressed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
In summary, due to the severity and increasing frequency of your left chest pain, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly. Start with a cardiologist to rule out any serious heart conditions. If necessary, they can guide you to other specialists based on the findings. Remember, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to chest pain, as timely intervention can be critical in preventing serious complications.
